Since we've been discussing the 40 man roster a bit here, I figure I will ask this question: Is every team required to have 40 players on the 40 man roster or can they have less, i.e. can a team just have 39 players for a couple weeks if they choose to do so? This isn't in regards to anything in particular rather just a random question I was thinking about the other night.

I'm pretty sure the Cubs have, from time to time, held just 39, for one reason or another.

they do not have to have 40 at all times -- I don't know if there's a minimum that need to be on there or not

They have. I think that's been more common during the off-season (to have room to add players to protect them from the Rule 5 draft), but I think it's happened during the season as well. I think there have been times they've traded a player on the 40-man for a player not on it, and they may leave the spot vacant until needed for a specific player rather than immediately adding somebody just to keep it full.

Really weak from the Tribune. You lift a happening on our message board for a story but can't even acknowledge where it happened? That's, like, stealing.

Anyway, I've written a letter to Sullivan on the subject and would encourage others to do so. Maybe if we bombard him with disgust he'll have to add an addendum noting it was North Side Baseball.

Sullivan doesn't seem like the type who is going to go back an acknowledge something like this based on letters from readers. He's also probably not a fan of the site, if he knows anything about it and all the negative things said about him.

Sullivan doesn't seem to be a fan of the internet, period.

Or most humans for that matter.

he likes to ride horses though.

Cubs.com is reporting that Guzman will not be able to throw for at least two weeks before rehabbing in Mesa. They don't indicate when he'll return to the Cubs.

Gone but not forgotten: While much of the focus was justifiably on the status of Ramirez, there also was news on reliever Angel Guzman, who underwent an MRI on Wednesday. That news wasn't nearly as good.

The results of his MRI showed a strained medial side of his right elbow. Guzman will not throw for at least two weeks and will then rehab at the Fitch Park Facilities in Mesa, Ariz.

Guzman was 0-1 with a 3.56 ERA in 12 appearances, including three starts.

Thanks (to goony and Bob also) for the answer. I thought that was the case but wasn't sure.

Well at least Gooz has a real reason to be on the DL. Sorry if this is a repost.

Per Rotoworld:

An MRI showed that Angel Guzman has a strained medial ligament in his pitching elbow.

The good news for Guzman is he didn't injure the ulnar collateral ligament which is associated with Tommy John surgery. He won't touch a baseball for at least two weeks in an effort to let the ligament heal.

Game Notes.

GOING YARD, TIMES THREE: The Cubs, who have

won their last 3 games and are 5-1 in their last 6, defeated the Braves, 9-1, last night at Turner Field thanks in part to Alfonso Soriano’s 3-home run

performance … Soriano’s homers came in his first 3 atbats and lasted a total of just 5 pitches, all against Lance Cormier … he belted his 35th career lead-off homer on the first pitch, then homered on the first

pitch in the second before going deep on an 0-2 count in the fourth.

Soriano is the first Cub to hit 3 homers in a game off the same pitcher since Sammy Sosa hit 3 off Houston’s Tim Redding September 23, 2001 at

Wrigley Field.

The left fielder is only the second Cub to connect for 3 homers in a game against the Braves, joining Ernie Banks, who accomplished the feat

May 29, 1962 at Wrigley Field.

Soriano is hitting .514 in June (19-for-37) with 6 homers, 9 RBI and 1.135 slugging percentage in just 8 games … with his 2 first-pitch homers last

night, he has now gone 16-for-28 (.571) when putting the first pitch in play this season.

LEADING OFF: Alfonso Soriano last night hit his 3rd lead off homer of the season, the 35th-career such blast of his career to tie him with Bobby Bonds for the 4th-most leadoff homers in major league history.

THE ROAD SHOW: Chicago is 16-15 in 31 contests away from the Friendly Confines … the 16 road victories are the most among the National League Central Division clubs.

© The Cubs are just 11-17 at Wrigley Field this season, but ironically have a better team batting average and ERA at home (.270 average and 3.90 ERA ) than they do on the road (.268 average and 3.98 ERA).
