St. Petersburg Times - Manager Joe Maddon said he gave OF Elijah Dukes, the center of recent controversy, the day off, using B.J. Upton in center and Josh Wilson at second. But it seemed an odd time for rest because Dukes hits right-handed, Kansas City started left-hander Odalis Perez, and Dukes hits much better, .261 to .198, against lefties. There have been reports the Rays are seeking to trade Dukes.

Dude is crazy for threatening to kill his wife. He's still got lots of potential though, only batting .212 this year but with a .332 OBP (which isn't that good, but it's decent for the .212 average), and on pace to hit 30+ HR.

I would love to have him on the team. But I wouldn't blame the Cubs for not going after him, especially when you have to trade something of value to get him. In light of recent events, I don't think there's anyway the Cubs even think about acquiring a player with his.....track record.

Felix Pie is basically Elijah Dukes, and he probably won't kill anyone. Let someone else have him

From a marketing standpoint, the timing on such a move couldn't be worse. But as people have pointed out, the entire front office is lame duck, perhaps they don't care so much about the image of the Cubs. They just want to win while they are still there.

I wouldn't complain if they traded for him, but I can't fault them if they steer clear.

How sure are we that he did this?

I recall a few seasons ago that Julio Lugo was released by the Stros after having been arrested for beating up his wife. He was accused, not convicted, and she later recanted her story. My opinion was that he wasn't worth going after b/c of what he had allegedly did, and I was savaged by many on this bd. Now it seems many feel the same about Dukes as I did about Lugo.

Why is Dukes different?

Although it doesn't make what allegedly happened any more acceptable, but didn't it come out that his wife drained his bank account while they were going through a divorce, and that she had some previous request for protection that was denied?

He has a long, long history of arrests, suspensions, fights, and ejections. His recent arrest was far from his first run-in.

When it comes to families, you never want to assume anything. There's no doubt two sides to the story and the truth is probably somewhere in between. Only question is who is it closer to?

As for trading for Dukes, sure...if the price were right. I mean, if it's Dukes for Eyre, sure thing! :D Else, lets hear what it would take and go from there. He's a talented player and you can always spin it as doing the humanitarian thing to remove him from Tampa Bay, which is obviously not the place on this earth this young man needs to be playing half of his ballgames.

We get a talented outfielder. Tampa Bay gets to feel it has done its civic duty. And Mrs. Dukes can sleep safe and sound.

Sounds like a win-win-win.

OK, point taken.

And what is/was Lugo's arrest history? We did not know and do not know. It stands to reason that the Astros would not have cut him as quickly as they did (within 48-72 hours, IIRC) had he not had some sort of history of that type of behavior.

My point is that the worm seems to have turned here a bit.

As if Chicago were the bastion of morality and upstanding behavior. If the guy can't handle TAMPA, I doubt he can handle Chicago.

But in Tampa he doesn't have the possibility of someone telling Zambrano he pointed to the scoreboard while Z's getting lit up if he misbehaves.

You know what? I lived in a Tampa suburb for 15 years of my life before moving here for college. I'm offended... in fact, you dissed my hometown, I'm so angry right now I could just......... AHHHHH, Elijah take it away:

“Hey, dawg. It’s on, dawg. You dead, dawg. I ain’t even bullcornin'. Your kids too, dawg. It don’t even matter to me who is in the car with you. Ninja, all I know is, ninja, when I see your muthaluvin' behind riding, dawg, it’s on. As a matter of fact, I’m coming to your mothaluvin' house.”

:)

Seriously though, Tampa is weak. Chicago could be a trouble town for him. Regardless of all that, I'd let him play right field in Wrigley. Lee could be a good influence on him. Unfortunately we'd probably have to give a lot up to get him, unless they just REALLY want to get rid of him

he was like this long before he made it to Tampa

Why not add one more fighter to the arena. If we're going to suck, might as well let the WWE break out in the locker room.

Z, Dukes and Barrett in a 3-way?

I almost fell out of my chair. Thank you.
