This a few days old, so I'm sorry if this is a repost but I saw it on Sportline and found it worth sharing:

The Yankees, who are looking for a starter, may be interested in acquiring Ryan Dempster, but Dempster said he hopes to stay with the Cubs, as reported by the Chicago Tribune . A trade, he said, 'is the furthest thing from my mind.'

Of course he does. This is a great place. High pay, no accountability.

Seriously? I know things are tough in the Bronx right now, but why on earth would they be willing to gamble on a pitcher who 1. was never successful as a starter and 2. hasn't started a game since 2005?

That's just ridiculous.

I would be a bit surprised if the Yankees looked at any middling NL starters to fill their rotation. They've been burned repeatedly with guys coming from the NL and not fulfilling their expectations with the Yanks, notably, Pavano, Johnson and Wright.

How would the Yanks match up in a trade with us though? I can't think of any realistic deals where the Yanks could fill one of our needs.

They're not too pleased with Bobby Abreu are they? Screw the A-Rod speculation. Only way we get any shot at him is if

a) He becomes a much hated man again

and

b) We give them Zambrano

Abreu is perfoming like crap, he's way better than that. a trip back to the NL might be what the doctor ordered. Any chances we'd be able to buy low on Abreu packaging Dempster and a couple other players?

They definitely are growing to dislike Abreu here, although considering how good he was for them when they made the trade, I'm not sure they are itching to get rid of him.

Dempster and Jones are owed $17.25 m for the rest of 2007 and 2008, combined.

Abreu is owed $13.25 for the rest of this year plus the $2m buyout, or $27.25m for this year and next combined. Obviously Abreu is going to cost more for the rest of this year $11.25 than Jones and Dempster ($6.75m). It's possible the Yankees would be willing to even out some of the money.

And in the for what it's worth category, Abreu's career line in Wrigley is .352/.433/.759

Could be an intriguing development if it's true.

Also it peeves me when people say "We should get this player, he kicks ass in Wrigley" when the stadium has little to do with that fact that these players dominate our pitching staff, not our ballpark

Regardless, I'd welcome Abreu with open arms.

I agree. I was just showing that number for the heck of it, not building a case around it.

It's the Jeff Blauser rule.

Yeah, I figured everyone feels that way, I just couldn't let it stand :)

Does the Abreu contract still have his NTC? He refused to go anywhere but a select group of teams last year without a huge extension-is there any sense that this fact would be different now?

According to Cot's Baseball Contracts, The Phillies paid Abreu $1.5M to waive his no trade clause. It says he still has a complete no-trade clause, and I would assume the Yankees would again have to pay him money to waive it, unless waiving the clause in the first place means it's now void? Does waiving a NTC mean it no longer is effective with the contract?

I think it would still be effective. He agreed to one trade; I don't think that would void the clause for the remainder of the contract.

Ya the NTC is still in effect.

From what i understand, it works like the waiver system. The club makes a deal and brings it to him and he can say yea or nay on the trade, but it remains in effect after the trade.

Most GMs will go to the player first (especially experienced veterans) and let them know that they are exploring options and get a list of teams they would go to. This helps mitigate the shock that they may be sent somewhere and helps the GM lock in on certain targets.

Also gives the GM some confidence that the player will actually go to the team the deal is arranged with and not back out of it or void it out of hand.

Some teams and players will actually lay out a list in the contract of teams that they can be traded too at any point and a list that they wont be sent to. But that is still kind of rare.

Big Z, Wade Miller, and Dempster to the Yanks for A-Rod please.

that offer would be met with such great amounts of laughter than Cashman may have an anyeurism

The A-rod speculation is fun and all but is realistically not possible.

Jones and Dempster for Abreu and cash sounds like a good deal for all involved. Hell, throw in one of our useless bullpen southpaws too. This all assuming that he waives his NTC.

That might actually make Steinbrenner's life easier, since reportedly Cashman's job is in jeopardy anyway. :D
