I don't understand how Hardy is running away with this. Can someone explain why he's been better than Jones, or Lee, or Bonds, or Ramirez? Even Reyes' stolen bases puts him right there with Hardy.

I just think hes the flavor of the month type of person. He is getting a lot of hype because he is playing well and is not well known by the majority of the people. But I find it hard to believe that he will keep it up so I voted for Jose Reyes who is putting up sick numbers as well and is more likely to keep it up than hardy imo.

how about 15 more RBI than the closest guy on the list, and he's played a large part in the Brewers' hot start

Who was the "other" that was voted for?

I didn't vote for other, but it should probably be Beltran, the best player on the best team in the league, playing a premium position and contributing a fantastic all around game.

And Hardy is not playing a premium position and contributing a fantastic all around game? If anything, the SS position is the more demanding position on the field.

Hardy is playing way better than anyone has expected including myself. I thought he would be a .300 hitter who would hit 15-20HR and play better than average defense. Sooner or later his hot streak will come to an end then we will see what he really is made of.

I said no such thing, your post was pointless and ridiculous. I simply listed a name that I thought should be considered under any "other" category.

RBIs? I thought we were better than that.

Jones' production blows Hardy away right now and their two teams are a game apart W-L wise

I was just pointing out that Hardy is playing a more demanding position and that he has also contributed in every aspect of the game.

Off the top of my head, I think that Hardy leads the NL in RC, topping Willingham (seriously) and Reyes, if that's a stat that you're into.

Hardy: .320/.364/.619/.983 14 HR, 41 RBI, 31 R, OPS+ 159

Jones: .307/.404/.647/1.051 12 HR, 26 RBI, 33 R, OPS+ 181

i'm totally down with sabermetrics, and Jones certainly has Hardy beat in terms of OBP/SLG/OPS, but how can you say 41 RBI/31 R is "blowing away" 26 RBI/33 R?

To me, production is getting runs scored, period. Getting on base is very important, but just because Chipper is on base more frequently hasn't meant he has helped the team score more

EDIT: Even if you do a simple (R+RBI-HR) on both guys, Hardy wins 58 to 47

EDIT 2: Hardy - .366 BARISP, .310 BABIP

Jones - .200 BARISP, .304 BABIP

So Hardy is way better with men in scoring position despite a negligible difference in BABIP

The key word there is simple.

You are judging the two based on how their teammates have played around them, as opposed to how they have done themselves.

VORP through Sunday:

HanRam: 24.9

Reyes: 24.3

Hardy: 23.3

Chipper: 23.1

Bonds: 22.8

D-Lee: 21.8

Helton: 21.3

Holliday: 20.9

The other guys I considered listing were Beltran and Chase Utley.

Exactly. It's a near 70 point difference in OPS, and was even more with the numbers used in the poll. Hardy's not even on the same plane. Bonds is a step above everybody, but he's on pace to have about 100 less PA's, so that's why I didn't go with him.

I went with Ramirez and I'm glad there's some statistical support that I didn't have to find myself. I was a little shocked that I was the only one to have voted for him. The .953 OPS (including over .400 OBP) with 9 HR and 15 SBs (though I hate to rely on SBs) is a pretty lethal combo.
