Woohoo for having an all LSU middle infield one of these days. Geaux Cubbies!

It worked fine for the Tigers in 2000, but I doubt Fontenot will be hitting 3rd. This is a good day for us LSU fans!

Yeah, if only Manieri can return them to their past glory.

<-- misses Mainieri at ND

Sure was nice of Notre Dame's athletic director to let Mainieri out of his contract, seeing as how he has two kids going to ND. That sucks, he still has to pay $500k.

How long before somebody calls him Fontenot-no?

any relation to Ray??

The Mets announcers on last night's telecast wondered the same thing, but they didn't know.

what was the 40 man change?
I haven't seen anything about that (cubs.com shows a 41-man 40-man roster at the moment). My guess is Wood to the 60-day DL.

You are correct:

Kerry Wood was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day to make room for Fontenot on the 40-man roster.

A quick search on wikipedia turned up nothing.

I just heard that Mike was sent back down and Marmol is here.

Correct:

CUBS RECALL RIGHT-HANDER CARLOS MARMOL

FROM TRIPLE-A IOWA

OPTION INFIELDER MIKE FONTENOT TO IOWA

Friday, May 18, 2007

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Carlos Marmol from Triple-A Iowa and optioned infielder Mike Fontenot (FONT-uh-no) to Iowa.

Marmol, 24, is 4-1 with a 3.95 ERA (18 ER/41.0 IP) in eight games (seven starts) for Iowa this season, walking 12 and striking out 48 in 41.0 innings of work. He has held the opposition to a .204 batting average (30-for-147) and has surrendered just one walk over his last three outings (14.1 IP).

Originally signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in July of 1999, Marmol made his Major League debut in 2006, going 5-7 with a 6.08 ERA (52 ER/77.0 IP) in 19 games (13 starts) for the Cubs. He earned the victory in his first career start June 11 at Cincinnati and later struck out a career-high eight batters June 28 vs. Milwaukee.

Marmol, who will wear uniform number 49, will be available for today’s 1:20 p.m. CT game against the White Sox at Wrigley Field.

Fontenot, 26, was selected by the Cubs this past Tuesday and collected his first career Major League hit that night with an eighth inning, pinch-double off New York’s Ambiorix Burgos. The infielder is hitting .364 (47-for-129) with six home runs and 27 RBI in 35 games with Iowa this season.

ESPN 1000 played a sound bite from Lou wherein he indicates that many changes will be coming on Monday, but what he would not specifiy what they would be. Levine speculates Marmol could be the closer.

Any reason given for why the changes coming had to wait until Monday, and not be enacted today?

David Schuster on The Score is also reporting "changes" but I didn't hear anything about them starting on Monday. This could get interesting!

Wonder if they'll move Marshall into the rotation, and make Angel Guzman a reliever?

Marmol and Guzman would certainly be livelier arms than Eyre, Dempster and Howry at this stage.

I could see Marmol as closer in a "throw stuff at the wall, something will stick" sense. I mean, he might have some success if you limit the looks batters get at him. But he had major trouble with control last year, and while "no walks in last 3 appearances" sounds enticing, I'm going to need to see him do it in the big leagues to believe it. Else it's just another guy who can't throw strikes trying to close games.

It's not the best reason, but it's probably because of all the attention surrounding the White Sox series.

Marmol could be a good closer someday, but not now. He's still getting his control issues locked down.

I'm glad to see Lou is willing to shake things up. Dusty didn't even consider doing that until the season was already over.

Either perform or ride the pine.

Lou is putting his fingers in the [expletive]. Soon he'll be out of fingers too.

I have to give him credit, he's trying.

Bruce,

Any ideas on what the changes might be?

I wish I knew. Lou has been very cryptic in his comments of late, with the bullpen and the lineup situation once Lee gets back. With the pen, I believe he's sending messages to his boss. Maybe they'll bring Marshall. I really doubt they'd release anybody, but Lou might want to make a statement.
