Supposedly, that is the rumor around Des Moines.

 

Did somebody else get hurt last night? I didn't see the game.

However, if it is true, I doubt it has anything to do with Izturis.

If they were going to release Izturis, it would be weeks ago. They aren't going to release him after having a fantastic May so far.

 

DeRosa sprained his wrist-right now the Cubs are down to 2 MIF's if DeRosa can't go tonight. Another MIF would have to be brought up so there at least is one backup, and Fontenot is the best option. If DeRosa doesn't go on the DL, I guess one of the pitchers would have to go down.

Agreed. Izturis (not a fan mind you) is having a very good run right now. That said, I don't expect it to continue, but he isn't going anywhere right now. Deadline maybe? Hopefully he can stay hot til then and we get more for him in a package, but not right now.

Fontenot is killing the ball in Iowa right now (1.029 OPS). Patterson is doing well too (.893 OPS). Fontenot is probably more versatile in the field though if he can actually play a good SS.

Chances are, if somebody gets called up, they'll be coming in off the bench. I would rather bring Fontenot up to do what his upside is (role player) than bring up Patterson and take a chance on hurting his development. Let Fontenot come up and pinch hit a few times and leave Patterson to play every day in the minors.

My guess would be Wood to the 60 day-with the retroactive date, that's what-15 days away? That seems like the very easy answer to me.

What happened to lee? i've been gone the last few days. Did he get hurt/

 

He has some spasms in his neck. They sent him to Chicago to get examined yesterday. It doesn't sound serious, but like they said, when it's the neck you just want to be completely sure. He'll probably be out a couple more days and then be back.

I've heard it too. Supposedly, Fontenot is already in New York with the big league team but has not been activated yet. They might be checking out Lee or DeRosa still before they make a move?

Is streaking Iowa Cubs infielder Mike Fontenot headed to the Chicago Cubs?

 

“He’s in limbo,” Iowa manager Buddy Bailey said before today’s 12:05 p.m. game against Sacramento.

 

When asked to clarify, Bailey said “maybe we’ll have more after the game.”

 

Fontenot, who has an 11-game hitting streak, is believed to be on his way to New York, where the Cubs face the Mets at 6:10 tonight. His Principal Park locker was cleaned out this morning.

 

The Chicago Cubs sent first baseman Derrek Lee back to Chicago Sunday to have an injured neck examined.

 

Fontenot was obviously not in Iowa's lineup for their game which is going on right now.

Wood to the 60-day DL is the most obvious choice here.

So much so, I'd say it's practically the ONLY choice that makes any sense. Had Prior been on the major (as opposed to minor) league DL then transferring him to the 60-day would have been a no-brainer.

My guess is that Fontenot will mostly rot while he's up here. I'm not too concerned about that, because that's not really hurting his development. He may get a start or two, but with Theriot and Izturis both playing well at the moment they are going to get most to all of the starts. Being the only backup at 2nd, SS, or 3B as well, Fontenot won't get as many chances for PH either, as Lou will want to save him as long as he can in games just in case.
