Journal Times - The Yankees and Mets are paying close attention to Carlos Zambrano, whose contract negotiations with the Cubs have broken down in the wake of the team being put up for sale by the Tribune company.

Not sure if they mean for the offseason or for the deadline.

I think broken down is far too harsh. However, if there's no chance of resigning him the Cubs absolutely have to move him whether we're in contention or not. A deal with the Mets involving Milledge and Heilman sounds interesting.

I don't see the Cubs being out of the race by the trade deadline, so Z isn't going anywhere. Not with Hendry's job on the line.

There are two possible good ways to go here...You can either resign him or trade him...Either one could be debated, but both are possible good decisions....

This means the Cubs will probably do niether and lose him in free agency

Sad but true

There's also a chance he gets hurt. Undoubtedly, this happens in his 2nd start after signing a 7 year deal.

Can Milledge play RF? Would the Cubs move Soriano to RF? It seems like an odd fit, particularly with an already crowded OF.

I would hope Hendry is focused on this year alone, because as soon as this team is sold he is going to be out the door so fast his head will be spinning.

I would.

Alfonso seems to have a great arm. Bruce Miles has been saying since the day he signed that Soriano should be the everyday RF for this club especially with Pie being groomed to become the everyday CF. Some of that was predicated on the belief that Jones could be dealt, which I still think can happen.

He definitely should be in RF.

I don't know if his offensive resurgence had anything to do with his move back to LF, but I wouldn't chance another move unless it was an emergency. He does have the arm, but RF in Wrigley is tough.

Zambrano for Tabata and someone else or Zambrano for Martinez wouldnt be the worst ideas ever made. However, Zambrano to a different team may be the best for him and the Cubs if they trade him.

Zambrano(with a window to guarantee an extension) + Jones for Santana/Weaver + Kendrick?

Would not mind. Kendrick is gonna be hurt for a while though.

what if we can spin Z off for a bat and somehow get someone like Ian Snell from the Pirates? He's a decent pitcher stuck on a bad team... and the pirates will most likely be selling at the deadline...
