I'm not a stat freak like some of you are, but I bet if you go back over the past few seasons and look at ERA's when Blanco is catching vs when Barrett is catching, you will notice a marked difference.

so the person holding the mitt makes a difference as to how well a guy throws?

You guys can be very shortsighted on here.

you haven't offered any evidence that you're right. give me something to look at and i won't be shortsighted.

Now I don't think the catcher matters all that much to a pitcher, but it does make some difference. I've never pitched in the majors obviously, but I did pitch in HS and I was much more comfortable with one of our catchers over the other one. I don't know if my statistics show it, but I think I pitched better when I was pitching to the catcher I felt more comfortable with.

That said, Carlos has pitched enough with Barrett, so it probably doesn't matter in this case.

I have a feeling the Cubs are going to be hitting the ball hard for the next 7 2/3 and will have little to show for it at the end of the day.

Anyone who doesn't believe that catchers can have a huge impact on how a pitcher performs is kidding themselves.

you're kidding yourself. Pitchers make the ultimate call on the pitches they throw. As such, they are responsible!

I never said that the pitcher wasn't ultimately responsible. Why do you think guys like Greg Maddux always liked to have a personal catcher?

Superstition.

Acutally the real reason goes entirely against your argument(not u banedon) The real reason is because Greg completely believes in the catcher making no difference so instead of having one of the lesser pitchers who might think the catcher does have an effect throw to the "backup" catcher Greg always did it. Why do u think it was always the backup? It has nothing to do with Greg feeling better with one catcher or the other.

Maddux likes using the best defensive catcher. Especially since he doesn't hold runners well.

I'm not saying that the catcher makes a huge deal, but I'd believe it makes some difference. Whether its enough to justify having personal catchers is highly highly doubtful.

Do you not have a response to my post about the difference in the number of caught games having an effect on catcher ERA?

Barrett catches far more games. That means he's going to be in there for far more badly pitched games than Blanco is. If he's in there catching guys like Glendon Rusch and Les Walrond, while Blanco gets to be Z's personal catcher, who do you think is going to have the better catcher ERA?

But you guys are making it seem like I said the catcher is the sole reason why Zambrano has been so inconsistent this year, which I never did.

But you did say it was one of the reasons. Which it's not.

You started the attacking by saying we were kidding ourselves if we didn't agree with you.

Yep. I know these Cubs.

Also, Thanks Lou, you trotted out another lineup with maybe 4 guaranteed outs.

care to explain?

Izturis counts as four people.

2006:

Barrett CERA: 4.75

Blanco: 4.98

Is that overall or just when Z is pitching?

Since Z's era wasn't in the high 4's I'm guessing overall ;)

lmao

apparently... the logic in the "four guaranteed outs" is probably worse than anything else that's been posted in this thread

Gameday makes these balls look like they're borderline. Since I don't hear a lot of screaming about the ump, should I take that as not being the case?
