I assume The Rock will just be up here a few days until Guzman can slide into that #5 spot?

is back spasms code for "suck"?

I'm sure if Rocky is lights out, we could see some other reliever go down.

This may be considered old news but David Kaplan just reported on WGN radio that Wade Miller was put on the DL with back spasms and Rocky Cherry has been called up to provide bull pen help.

Also MP will have exploratory arthroscopic surgery tomorrow.

LOL@the DL. Miller on the DL = buying time. I doubt there's anything really wrong with him other than his ineffectiveness.

No-the team still has 11 pitchers, and they want 12. When Guzman comes up, it will be at the expense of a position player-if that be a Jones trade, Pie to AAA, or the less likely option of Cedeno to AAA.

I would've sent him down. At least he would've gotten some work done.

Ok...Stoney says Fonzie wants to lead off because he seems more fastballs there? Isn't that pretty dumb? I mean there is only one way he's assured to "lead off" and that's the first inning...

To bad floyd and jj couldnt have some "back spasms"

Huh?

Are you really comparing the value of Wade Miller to JJ?

Jones is not a star, never will be, but he's solid.

I don't think that Miller would have accepted the assignment. This allows them to sort of hedge their bets-keep him, but not let him pitch, and see what happens the next couple weeks. Then they could send him on a rehab assignment, which lengthens the time they can keep him in the organization just in case a few injuries happen while keeping him out of the majors.

I agree that he won't necessarily be the first batter everytime he comes to the plate (outside of his first AB) but, I do think that Soriano is most productive at the top of the order. He's not a very good hitter with RISP and he doesn't seem to hit off speed pitches well.

I dont think i have seen this said anywhere. Hendry and Piniella have always stated that they were going to start with 12 and evaluate it in late April depending on injuries, effectiveness, and the team.

With the injuries to Soriano, ARam, and DeRosa, i cant see us going with 12 right now.

There was a story about the need for 12 pitchers on Saturday, but here's another one from last night:

"I need the 12th pitcher in here," Piniella said. "We can't go anymore with 11 pitchers. We stretched the rubber band about as far as it needs to be stretched. We need somebody.

Stone is saying we shouldn't trade Jones because he's there as insurance for Floyd being hurt. We have to have that big LH bat in the lineup. First of all, when did Jones become a big LH bat? Secondly, Stone should never, ever become a GM.

Now he's saying Pie needs to be put in the leadoff spot in the lineup when he goes back down to the minors because he's got speed and he should be in that spot. What an idiot.

Steve Stone is an no-doubt idiot when it comes to baseball roster decisions and evaluation.

And a hypocrite. Several years ago he was critical of the Cubs front office for letting Cedeno win the starting job based on his limited success in the majors, and now he is critical of the Cubs front office for not giving Theriot a shot at second base because he was great with the big club last season. Pick and choose your battles Steve...heres hoping you are no where near the front office of this team when ownership changes.

I forgot what he said about Cedeno. But so far Cedeno has not proven to have much ML talent has he? (offensively atleast). He DID support his Theroit argument pointing to Theroit's continued improvement throughout his minor league carreer in Batting average. We all like Theriot don't we? I think he's gotta point there. Would we be so bad off if we didn't have Derosa and Theriot was playing at 2B every day?

Technically, couldn't they bring Angel up on the 1st to start, send him down after the game to Iowa for another reliever, and then recall him again on the 12th?
Yes they could. They could start him on the 1st and send him back down the 2nd; he'd then be eligible to come back up on the 12th.

Felix Pie will remain with the team until at least May 2, when the Cubs will likely call up right-hander Angel Guzman to take Miller's place as the fifth starter. What happens to Miller is anyone's guess.

"It's not anything serious," Hendry said, adding that Guzman would be the probable call-up if he pitches well Thursday in Iowa.

Isn't this Hendry basically admitting that Miller sucks instead of contending he's injured?

"We'd love to be able to find a way to keep him and have him help," Hendry said. "But he'd be the first to tell you it couldn't continue the way the (three) starts have gone."

All hail the rise of Angel Guzman!:

Angel Guzman-R-Cubs Apr. 23 - 7:39 pm et

With Wade Miller on the DL, the Cubs will call up Angel Guzman to start May 1 against the Pirates.

Guzman gets the nod over Carlos Marmol. Since he could gain a permanent rotation spot with a strong showing, he'd be worth taking a chance on in NL-only leagues.
