I'm declaring that as of this moment, I am posting in this thread. Soon...I shall post in another thread. Eventually, I will do the laundry. At some point, I will make myself dinner. At the end of the day, I will be sleeping.

Why you can't acknowledge that Prior has been great in the past, is beyond me. If he hasn't put up the innings you'd like to see, that doesn't change the fact that when he has pitched, he's been dominant.

I've stated that Prior isn't 100%. But all things being equal I'd bet he'd out produce Miller.

He's being given the raw end of the deal by his "employers" again. You only put up with crap as an employee until you can find a better gig.

That's all I'm saying.

Oh, I think there's a great deal of question whether Prior would outproduce Miller.

As for being crapped on by his employer, I suppose you could apply that argument to any player who gets sent down. So why should Prior be given special treatment? He's not getting it done right now, so he's down for the moment. Why is this bad? If Miller sucks and Prior does well at Iowa, the Miller is out and Prior is back in. Sounds like a solid, merit-based approach to me.

Everyone always criticizes the Cubs for being too soft with veteran players. But once they get tougher and demand a level of performance, suddenly everyone's all over them for that, too. I guess they can't win either way.

The same reason a rookie with promise should play over a crappy veteran. The chances of Prior improving are better than Miller. All this said I prefer Guzman over both.

While we're declaring...I'm declaring myself eligible for the NBA draft.

This is speculation at best. No one knows when, or even if Prior will ever put it together again as it was in the past. If he can't get his fastball back up to at least the low to mid 90s, then he's going to have to really lock in his control to be a more finesse pitcher. Mix into that the fact that when he's on he hits his spots, and when he's off he can't hit the broad side of a barn and it doesn't look like the recovery will be that easy. It's not impossible, but I'd say Miller, at this point, has shown more recovery and a much higher likelyhood of continuing that recovery.

Guzman needs a year in long relief IMHO. I'm no MLB pitching coach, but it would be nice to actully let someone adjust to the league while you can still protect them.

Gordon Wittenmyer / The Sun-Times[/url]"] It turns out Mark Prior has opened the season on the disabled list for the fourth straight year after all. The Cubs were required to commit him to the DL when they decided to hold him back from the first week of the season at Class AAA Iowa so he could increase his stamina to at least five innings during extended spring training in Arizona.

The Cubs initially reported Monday that the extended spring move would not include a DL move. The Iowa Cubs open the season Thursday in Round Rock, Texas.

Because Prior was optioned to Iowa when the major-league club cut its roster last week, he'll open on the seven-day minor-league DL.

There's been a lot of over-reaction in this thread and I don't want to add to it but.......

I admit I find it a little concerning that this thing keeps changing. He's fine...he's just a little behind...he just needs to make a AAA start or two...he'll stay in Arizona...he's on the DL but it's just a technicality...

This looks familiar. I hope it's not the same-old.

Excellent, we should hold a press conference! :D

I thought one of the requirements for going on the DL, was that the player was injured? Does Prior have some sort of injury or is the problem his stamina?

Also, if Prior were so healthy when he came to camp, why in the world are the Cubs handling him as if he were about to fall apart?

Not necessaraly, but you can make anything into an injury with enough thought or a doctor who says there "might" be something wrong.

It already is the same old. Prior has come to ST exactly once (2003) ready to play. Other than that, it's always something with this guy.

I want to like Prior but it's his job to be ready to play when pitchers & catchers report. If he can't do that, then there's only one person who is to blame, and that's Mark Prior.

I don't know that you can "blame" Prior for having shoulder issues that have slowed him down. He was born with a loose shoulder, he didn't do it out of boredom one day.

I agree with that, and what I was getting at with the "same-old" comment was what we're hearing (or not hearing) from the Cubs. I just always get the feeling they're hiding something, and it seems like things always start off with "everything's fine, it's a precaution" and the next thing you know it's the all-star break.

I'd like a straight answer.

Stone said on 670 yesterday that they just want him to be able to throw 6 innings before he starts at Iowa. So why not have him stretch his arm out in AZ rather than 30 degree Iowa. Stone was actually not his normal Cub bashing self yesterday. He kept talking about Veal and how much of a stud he is going to be.

Well, it's not his fault that he's gotten injured, but it's still his responsibility to be able to do his job competently when he comes back. Ultimately, that's what it comes down to. Either Prior can pitch or he can't, and that's largely on his shoulders. The Cubs can't just pay the guy to sit on the DL forever.

It is a combination of both I guess. Sometimes he just likes to take uncalled for digs at the Cubs.

"Honest" or not, I have trouble respecting the opinion of someone who once suggested we trade Aramis Ramirez for Cesar Izturis.

I have no trouble at all respecting Stone's opinion on the game of baseball. I don't agree with that statement, but it doesn't mean he is always wrong.

A bit of political humor :D , and a jab at a statement about a subject that people are masochistically drawn to (Political feelings aside).

He knows the game, I think he went out of his way taking jabs at players and Baker simply b/c his situation with the Cubs went so far downhill towards the end of '04 to the point everyone knew he wasn't back.

He went out in a poor way, it's probably not his personality in general and having to deal with all the BS from players like Alou, Mercker, etc. as well as Baker, but he should've handled it better.
