I am going out of town the next 6 days so someone is going to have to pick up the rest of the rams pick for me.

I'm willing if doubling up is ok at this point.

At this point I think that the 5 people still checking this thread could all triple up and it would be ok.

True, very true.

With the 27th pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots select:

S Brandon Merriweather- U of Miami

Character issues, but may be the 2nd best safety in the draft. Pats need a S with Rodney Harrison aging and injury prone. I went with need over best player available.

Very solid pick in my opinion.

I never understood the "best player available" strategy. I mean, even if Adrian Peterson is still on the board at 14, would it really make sense for Carolina to pick him, already having Foster and Williams? You can always spin off the pick to someone who wants AD at that spot - it's not like there would be a shortage of teams to pick from.

BPA may not be right for a team drafting very high in the draft, but for teams in the later half of the first it makes quite a bit of sense. Whenever a team has solid starters but age concerns or questionable depth, BPA is a good strategy. I really hope that the Cowboys go with BPA this year. Even though we signed Gurode, Davis, and Columbo, if Brown or Blalock are the best players left at our pick I wouldn't have a problem picking them.

There has to be a limit to the BPA strategy, and you're right that you cannot pick BPA in football as much as some of the other sports. With so many football picks being busts though, if you have a player who you rate much higher than anybody else on your board, it makes sense to take him-rosters fluctuate so much that you usually can find a spot for them to play. That isn't the case at QB, OT if both your tackles are secure, and S if you have two great safeties, but every other position I think you can work players in somewhere. Now, if two players are similar, you always want to have need be the deciding factor on anything that is anywhere near a close call.

Of course-I'm biased because the Colts have taken two offensive guys in the first round in the last 6 years, and have been criticized for it badly because they didn't draft for the obvious need on their defense-those two were Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark, who were not needed at the time but now are integral parts of the team.

OT is not a good example. You can move a good OT to guard and it should work out fine. Plus, moreso than any position OL is a high injury risk position(s). Safety could also use depth too.

Anthony Spencer LB/DE Purdue. They need a starting LB and he went to Purdue he is first round talent that I can't pass up.

The Chicago Bears Select..............

Joe Staley OT Central Michigan

Really the best value on the board at this point, some mocks have Staley going in the top 20. Fred Miller is nearing the end, and the Bears really don't have any youth at the position. Staley has bearly even tapped his potential and could be a lock down LT in the league. His main weakness is obviously strength at the point of attack, but I'm confident he will continue to get stronger as a pro. He can sit behind Tait & Miller in 07, then take over in 08 at LT moving Tait back to RT, his more natural position.

Chargers take WR Robert Meachem, Tennessee.

SEC boys are usually safe picks.

Except for LSU boys picked by the Cowboys. Skyler Green, Steven Peterman, Marcus Spears (so far, though I'm hoping Phillips can turn him around), Brady James (Hoping Phillips can turn him around too, though I'm not his biggest fan), David LaFleur (Decent for awhile but injuries derailed his career).

good choice... I think Bears fans should be happy if this were to actually happen

Staley is my favorite of the OL likely to be available at 31. That includes Blalock, Ugoh, Grubbs, and Sears.

I imagine the marketing peeps for the Bears would love this pick as well.

I pm'ed CCP, I'm suprised he hasn't picked yet.

CCP is heading to Indiana and is currently unable to post. He expects to be able to give his pick within a couple hours from now. He posted before but it must have gone at least partially unnoticed.

If CCP holds true to Colt form, he'll surprise everyone with the pick. DT is probably the most likely selection, with LB a possibility (though I don't think the Colts value that position enough to take one in the first round and they have some good young ones already -- watch out for Freddy Keiaho). However, don't be stunned if they go with a WR.

They could use a #3 WR, though Dallas Clark basically played that role this year and did it well. Steve Smith (USC) would be a reach at 32, but would be a near perfect fit.

Sidney Rice is a better pick, but its obviously a homer one, coming from me.

Sorry about the wait everyone-I just got in to Indiana 10-15 minutes ago.

When considering my pick, I narrowed it down to LB, DT, and WR. None of the other positions need a possible 1st round pick. Of those, LB is out-the Colts do not like to draft a linebacker anywhere near that high unless he is a very special talent, and there is none on the board. They like to promote from within-expect them to draft a linebacker on the 2nd day again.

I thought hard about WR, but I just couldn't do it. Meachem would have been the pick, but with him off the board none of the picks made enough sense. Rice and Jarrett do not fit in the Colts offense well at all, and Anthony Gonzalez and Steve Smith are much better fits but are a little too much of a reach to take a receiver here. Instead Polian finally decides to take a position of need-DT. I considered 2 people here, but the person I selected is:

Colts select: DT Demarcus Tyler, NC State

Tyler is a 1 gap DT that should give the Colts size while not giving up their penetrating into the backfield style that the Colts like to play. He is continuing to improve. This is a little bit of a surprise to see Tyler this high, but the Colts have never had the same type of player rankings as other teams-this simply continues it.

You will regret forever not taking Harrell. :D

Rice is more talented, without a question. But Smith is the perfect fit for the Colts O. He's a smart WR, great route runner, sure hands, and can run after the catch. He's Marvin Harrison without the speed.

Sid is all those things and he's 6'4 and can catch the ball in traffic. I understand what you are saying, but I think Rice fits with Indy just as much as Smith.

I also like Anthony Gonzalez for the Colts. Yes, they need a #3 WR, the offense was much better when Stokely was healthy, they have little depth at the position, and they could use a prospect to develop into a #1 or 2 as Harrison ages. That would also allow Clark to move back to TE as he isn't a slot receiver.
