The Chicago Cubs today announced its first round of roster cuts, reducing its spring roster from 58 players to 44 players.

Infielder Scott Moore and left-handed pitcher Clay Rapada have been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. In addition, infielder Brian Dopirak has been optioned to Double-A Tennessee and right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija has been optioned to Single-A Daytona.

Ten non-roster invitees have been returned to minor league camp, including right-handed pitchers Jason Anderson, Sean Gallagher, Adam Harben, Ben Howard, John Webb and Randy Wells. Infielders Mike Kinkade and Eric Patterson, as well as outfielders Tyler Colvin and Chris Walker, have also been returned to minor league camp.

Chicago’s spring roster of 44 players consists of 22 pitchers (three non-roster invitees), five catchers (two non-roster invitees), 10 infielders (three non-roster invitees) and seven outfielders.

So who is left at camp?

Pitchers: Zambrano, Hill, Lilly, Marquis, Prior, Miller, Cherry, Cotts, Dempster, Eyre, Guzman, Howry, Wuertz, Novoa, Marmol, Marshall, Mateo, Ohman, Wood...NRI: O'Malley, Walrond, Pignatiello?

Catchers: Barrett, Blanco, Soto...NRI: Hill & Fox?

Infielders: Lee, DeRosa, Theriot, Izturis, Cedeno, Ramirez, Ward (?) NRI: Hoffpauir, McGehee, Perez?

Outfielders: Soriano, Pie, Jones, Murton, Coats, Floyd, Pagan

Does that sound right?

Looks right to me. It should be the 40-man less Moore, Samardzija, Rapada & Dopirak, plus the remaining NRIs.

Surprised nobody has whined about Patterson being sent down so early.

Better for him I believe, will now be able to get regular playing time.

I'm surprised Moore didn't get more of a look. He had what? 3-4 ABs?

I'm really surprised Haufpauir survived the first round. He must be impressing some people.

Or showcasing at this point.

Haufpauir might be of interest to the Braves. Micah is a good guy. I'd like to see him get a chance, but he's blocked in Chicago.

Or maybe they want to give Derrek an extra day or two to nurse his injury from today.

That would be my guess.

Buck Coats surviving round one makes it seem to me that he is going to be the "25th man". I could be extremely wrong though, it happens quite often actually

I won't whine about it, but I'm disappointed.

That and Ward has been sick. Hoffpauir is seen as more of an "organization guy."

To early to speculate with DLee when he will be back in the lineup? Or was it really not that big of deal?

Derrek Lee also tweaked his groin while running the bases in the first inning and was removed as a precautionary measure after the top of the second.

Hendry said Lee is fine, and Lee told Cubs officials he could run the 60-yard dash, if necessary.

Why would anyone want to run 60 yards if they weren't being chased?
