I just don't understand the baseball lingo in this. Sean Gallagher: non roster invitee? :?
It means he is on the minor league, not major league, roster, but still invited to major league Spring Training. Normally players on the major league (40-man) roster report to the major league camp and players with minor-league contracts report to the minor league camp. However, veterans signed to minor league contracts and some prospects are sometimes invited to major league camp even though they're not on the major league roster. If they actually make the team for Opening Day, then they have to be added to the major league roster.

Why would anyone want to run 60 yards if they weren't being chased?

Please forgive me if this is a dumb question but do civilians ever get a chance to try out for or walk on to a major league spring training camp?

That'd be sweet!

I believe teams sometimes conduct tryout camps, but I don't think it's possible to just walk on in Spring Training.

Teams definitely conduct try-outs. I went to an Orioles try-out my senior year of high school.

I highly doubt they have a walk-on sort of thing.

Willie Mays Hayes might disagree.

Surprised nobody has whined about Patterson being sent down so early.

Better for him I believe, will now be able to get regular playing time.

I won't whine about it, but I'm disappointed.

He needs to work on things (defense) that will be much better addressed amongst the minor leaguers. He wasn't going to make the team with DeRosa and Theriot around.

The Padres invited a Marine to camp who had just gotten back from Iraq. He's supposed to be a pitcher, but he's missing a finger or two on his throwing hand from when a flash-bang went off in his hand. I haven't heard much about how he's doing though...

Not to lessen the story, because it is a nice one, but he lost a finger (I believe his pinky) on his non-throwing hand. I have not heard how he has faired so far this spring, but I'll check it out.

He ruined it for everyone else. Have you seen him lately? He's huge! Gotta be a roider. Now everyone is scared to bring in walk-ons like that.

Dopi back to Tenn this soon? Guess he didn't make too much of an impression on the new staff.

They may have just figured that he couldn't get enough reps with Lee, Ward & Hoffpauir taking cuts at first base in front of him.
