This game was weird, though, in the fact that they would let obvious calls go (JaJuan getting thrown around on the final rebound) and call ticky-tack fouls (hand checks right beside each team's bench) all second half.

It honestly looked like two completely different officiating crews in each half.

No excuse though, we had a 20 point halftime lead - we should have won that game but we blew it.

That's my biggest beef about the way the game ended. The second half was called super tight, and basically every time a guy drove to the hoop, the defender picked up a foul. The Tennessee rebounder got fouled, and the rest of the half they were calling what Conley did (getting in the offensive player's way on a drive) a foul. Call the game the same the whole way through. I think college basketball refs are only marginally worse than college football refs.

hey terrific, foul not called on the rebound and another on conley's body contact on the drive... good to see ohio state in the elite 8 after deserving to win all of one of their first three games.

The officiating in the game might have been biased towards OSU, but in the last minute if anything it was to UT-the only real questionable call was the one on OSU where the two players hips just happened to collide while the UT player was on the way down.

no way, really? What pisses me off more than this game is the fact that Ohio State should already be out. Greg Oden throws a guy out of bounds and somehow that's not a flagrant foul. Go Memphis, then go UNC/USC/Georgetown/Vandy. Please don't let this overpaid, undeserving team win a title.

i hope holy cross wins

oh wait

hey, on the good side, if you guys win the title, it'll be your second major college sports title in five years that you can credit to incompetent officiating!

blahblahblahblah.

i had tennessee winning this game in my bracket, so the victory is bittersweet.

Aaaaaaaaaaand here come 25 OSU free throws.

And at least half of them have been ticky-tack crap.

the officiating in that game was awful... are these really the best college basketball refs?

They must be, and that's the sad state of officiating. I've seen it in high school games too. Officials just seem to be getting worse all the time.

Believe me Dew, if you saw that play again, you'd agree with me on this one. I've watched it about 5 times, and it was completely incidental contact-the OSU guy was backing up to run down the court and the UT player almost fell on top of him-if he had fallen to the ground, the officials might have been forced to make a call, but there was really no foul there.

Even if I take back my statement that it was obvious (which I'm willing to do if you're that sure), the refs were calling incidental crap like hand checks nowhere near the basket the entire second half. There is no difference between that and 75 percent of what they were calling from halftime on.

Again, though, I put no blame on the refs for this loss. We blew it. Pure and simple. We had the game won at halftime and we choked. It hurts now, but we are a very young team and I'm not all that surprised. It sucks though.

In my opinion, Ohio State has now been exposed twice in this tournament as the most mediocre #1 seed I can remember. They were virtually eliminated in both games until the other teams decided that instead of "playing to win", they were just going to play "not to lose".

I came into this game thinking Tennessee was the better team, and to be honest, I still feel that way. They outplayed Ohio State. Don't get me wrong, Ohio State still played their way back into it, and they are the team that's moving on. But they have not shown me anything all year that makes me believe they are very good. Now, having said that, I'm sure they'll win the national title and I'll have to eat crow.

I don't see how we did that. We tried to play the exact same style as we did in the first half, but between our shots not falling and the extra fouls being called (whether correct or not) slowed the tempo of the game down. There wasn't a fundamental change of style on our part, it was simply poor performance from the young players and especially Lofton.

Okay, maybe not so much Tennessee as Xavier. But the defense in the second half was a lot different. But like you said earlier, taht comes with the team's style of play. Giving up only 32 points in the first half was pretty good, but it just looked like that full and 3/4 court pressure defense took a lot out of the players, and Ohio State was able to climb back in that way.

Agreed, except I think basketball refs are much worse than football refs. No doubt.

I had Tennessee too, but I really don't have much money riding on it. I'll root against Ohio State in every game they play, regardless of my pick.

The press does hurt us against very deep teams like OSU because we only go about 7-8 with strong depth. Things get iffy any deeper. Teams like OSU can trot 9-10 guys out there and that hurts.

Once Bruce has a little more time to bring in more depth and a little more talent, the press won't negatively affect us nearly as much.

I can already see how much more effective it is this year with an extra 1-2 guys in the rotation.

oh well, i guess every good story needs a villain... I've still got my villain to root against.

Go Butler, UNLV, USC and Georgetown tomorrow (note that all the teams I'll be rooting for go against my picks except for G'town - guess I'm not willing to sell out the underdog for the prospect of winning $100)

I'll feel much better if Florida loses tomorrow, but with my luck they'll probably go all the way.

At times like this, I hate sports. Why couldn't I have grown up loving Duke, the Yankees and the Patriots? My life would be so much easier.

I apologize to everyone on the board for these horrible words, I'm just in a very depressed mood right now.

Exactly how I felt about 4 hours ago...

You'll get over it eventually. I'm already partly over it. But usually, the morning after is the worst. Hopefully I don't break my hand from punching a wall.

Hahahahahahahahahaha

I was afraid you were going to kill yourself for awhile there. OMG MY WORLD IS COMING TO AN END.

To flames and anyone else on this board who had a team go down tonight, sorry. You guys had a great year, nothing to be ashamed of.

Bruce Pearl is crying a river on the postgame press conference about Lofton only shooting one free throw in 2 games against OSU this year.

Not saying I blame him necessarily, more of an observation.

In my case, it's 200 dollars or more, and I'm guessing you have a tad more money than I do.

But I won't cry any rivers if SC beats the Heels. Go UNLV too.

The morning after is terrible, especially for me. I have a 45 minute drive to work and I always listen to the local sportstalk station. In the morning, all they'll be talking about is the game tonight. Thus I have to either relive every moment of this game or not listen to sportstalk (probably what I'll do).

Then, when I get to work, being the sportswriter, I'm expected to discuss the game with whoever wants to and, while that's normally an enjoyable part of the job, it'll suck in the morning.

The good thing is, my boss (an OSU fan) is on vacation so I won't see him again until Monday.

Lofton played awful in the second half. He's still the man and I hope like anything he'll come back next year, but to be honest he did not step up when we needed him to.

As I attempt to recuperate from this loss, I turn the channel over to NFL Network and what do I see? Highlights from the Titans/Patriots game that knocked us out of the playoff race.

I can't win tonight, I'm going to bed.

Oden has Corey Patterson Syndrome. I swear, the guy never gets excited or cracks a smile for anything.

Don't you remember his tip-dunk in the B10 Championship where he broke the glass in the surrounding block with his primal scream?

no, you can tell by the look on his face that he's 37

If a newspaper revealed that oden was being played by oden's father, I wouldn't be surprised. If he lives past 60, I'll be very surprised

Luckily I don't have to wake up till noon tomorrow. I'm going to try to avoid reading the paper too. It's going to be depressing though on campus.

Well when you're four points away from being at your first Elite Eight in your school's history, it is pretty depressing. That and the fact how everyone was so excited for the game tonight.

But I understand that I could have it much worse.

so, Raisin, break down the matchups for me. I haven't seen UCLA play enough to know them real well.

I figure we've got an advantage down low, and you've got a slight advantage in guard play.

Key Matchups:

Afflalo vs. Rush

Collison vs. Robinson

KU's frontcourt vs. UCLA's
