Someone will have a better recollection than me, but a few years back (maybe 3), Izturis was facing a Cubs pitcher and took 10+ pitches and then finally jacked one out of the park. I wanna say it was closer to 14-15 pitches rather than 10. Endless at bat where Izturis continued fouling off pitches.

It was a horrible sight as a Cub fan.

I believe you are actually talking about Alex Cora, who hit a home run on pitch number 18 against the Cubs.

Wow, I really screwed that one up, eh? :D

What year was that? It sounds strikingly familiar and is probably the at bat I was referring to. Thought for sure it was Izturis.

May 12th, 2004. Cora was the last batter Clement faced in that game.

I would have bet money that it was izturis, also. I seem to remember the game taking place in LA.

Edit: I think this at bat was actually against the Padres. I went through the game logs for 03-06 and didn't find any HR's by Izturis against the Cubs.

Izturis has never hit a HR against the Cubs. Alex Cora had an 18 pitch at bat against Matt Clement on May 12, 2004.

Looks like I'm quite late to this story. If you go toward the bottom of this link, it was in the 7th inning. If you click on the 18 next to Cora's name, it gives you a pitch by pitch breakdown of the at-bat.

Sorry to have hijacked the thread with thoughts on Alex Cora. It was wishful thinking on my part that Izturis had some involvement with the lengthy at bat that I still have faint memories of.

I'm looking for reasons to like the guy, so I am at least trying. :D

i dont know if this was addressed in this thread, but is fouling off pitches considered a skill or is it pretty random across good and bad, patient and impatient hitters? cause that at bat with clement was devastating.

looking at the cub lineup that game, who the heck was damian jackson?

Either or...

It just means you're good at keeping the bat head in the zone for longer than most in a swing, good at choking up on the bat, or will swing at anything with two strikes with the two previously mentioned.

I at least appreciate the effort-I hope and I think that Izturis will give you more reasons to like him very soon now :D

Jose Cardinal (there's a name from the past) used to drive pitchers crazy by intentionally fouling off balls. I remember opposing pitchers commenting on it in the day. As I remember R. Carew was pretty good at it too.

He also goes by the names of Rey Ordonez, Neifi Perez, and Enrique Wilson. :D
