What I call giving a chance might be different than your giving a chance. Mine would be not constantly talking about how much he sucked in the past.

Saying "hope I'm wrong" seems like he's giving him a chance to me.

you're right. However "So other than sucking in 2002 and 2003". . and "suck at pitching" is not so positive.

who said i was being positive about him? i said i hope he does well.

listen, he's really pretty much sucked for the better part of the last five years (including sucking especially hard in the most recent season). if you want to pretend that didn't happen, go ahead. if he was on the cardinals right now, i truly doubt you'd have anything positive to say about him.

so i'm not going to sit here and pretend i'm excited about him. and me doing that is not going to have any effect on anybody doing anything anywhere.

I'm over it. Just forget about it. Be as negative as you want.

would you have a positive outlook for marquis if he had signed with the mariners or the cardinals or anyone else in baseball besides the cubs?

I think Marquis will put up better numbers this year than last. As far as how much better he will be this year, that remains to be seen. I'll take a guess though..4.40 ERA for the season.

PECOTA: 5.44 ERA

Bill James: 5.14

CHONE: 5.13

ZIPS: 4.95

I'd say 4.40 is pretty optimistic. I'd love for it to happen, but it's more likely we see a 5-something.

Previous to last year he put up ERA's of 4.13 and 3.71 and some other crappy ones. There is reason to believe he could fall inline close to the above numbers this year.

If I had heard they had fixed a supposed mechanical flaw? I'd say that he had a decent chance to be good, and a decent chance to be very bad-which is about what I'm saying now :D

Don't some posters realize the hypocrisy in their statements where they tell others to not get excited about and judge a player based on his best year, and yet turn around and rip Marquis apart mostly because of his horrible year last year? Aside from a rather high WHIP, he pitched pretty well in 2004 and 2005.

so basically, other than being easy to hit he was pretty good?

also, he sucked hard in 2002 and 2003.

It's not about how many hits you give up. It's about how many runs you give up.

...and runs come from hits and walks (aka whip).

Runs are tracked by ERA, not by WHIP. WHIP is a nice little ancillary stat, but ERA is much more important.

It's not that different than football. What do you care more about? How many points you gave up or how many yards?

Honestly, I wouldn't be following him. Let me seriously think about that. If someone ASKED me to think about what he might do. I'd prob say he might lower his ERA by about 1.00 just based on his last few years and carreer #'s.

amen to that sarcasm.

gut feelings from fans of the team the guy signs with following a good spring training outing are typically much more accurate.

That's what I've heard too. He used to throw left handed and now he throws right. It's just like the Cards not to have noticed that.

Gut feelings. Or just going to carreer #'s and the last few years?

He put up those numbers in a different ballpark with a different defense behind him and with the added benefit of pitching against the Cubs rather than against the Cardinals.

There is a chance he could put up a 4.40 ERA, but it's a less than 25% chance according to PECOTA. That's why I say expecting a 4.40 ERA would be pretty optimistic.
