I knew this would happen. The NY media love to get into speculation.

I'd love A-Rod but don't see it happening.

I'm almost certain ARod will be on a team other than the Yankees in 2008. Maybe the Cubs aren't the likeliest destination, but I don't know of another team that clearly has a more realistic shot.

Posted
BacktoBanks mentioned a 3-way, Blaylock going to NY. Do you see a feasible scenario that Texas could get out of some of that money owed to Arod?

Without him opting out? I guess the only way I could see that happening is if those three teams do pull off a 3-way trade, and the Cubs and Yankees kick in some cash to entice Texas.

The Rangers best case scenario is ARod opting out.

The Yankees want to keep ARod without opting out, or trade him for value.

Theoretically, the Cubs would have to decide whether they want to trade for him, or wait and hope to just sign him next year.

I really don't see any realistic way in which the Rangers get out from what they owe without ARod opting out.

I'm not a genious on contract stuff is why I'm asking. I know we don't have unlimited funds, but what if we absorb a little of the money owed by Texas. I know these scenario's are unlikely, but I'm not on board with there is no chance either.

Yanks get Blaylock

Cubs get Arod

Rangers get cash and prospects

Not that this would work, but something similar. The Yanks come out getting a bit of the shaft, but at least they would get something for him. Of course, it all comes down to Arod wanting to play in Chicago.

I don't think the Rangers would only want cash and prospects for Blaylock. The Yankees could send someone some cash with all of the money they would save on Arod. As I said earlier, the deal would have to be tweaked with other players (prospects) and/or cash.

A-Rod talk won't go away. Dan patrick is at Cubs camp and is raising it again, and no doubt will do so when he interviews Piniella later on ESPN Radio;.

I'm fine with that. Someone should be planting a new bug in Hendry and Steinbrenner's ear everyday.

Man I would love to see this lineup:

Soriano

Murt

ARod

Lee

ARam

Jones

Barrett

DeRosa

Northside Murderer's Row.

Heck you add Marquis and Z and you have 9 pretty good hitters!

That is nice. It makes me worry what we gave up to get A-Rod with this line up, but I'll go ahead and assume it was Cesar Izturis and Cliff Floyd. :D

I'd always assume Lee would bat #5 if we landed ARod.

Honest question...why bat him #4 instead of #5?

I would rather have Lee in a pressure situation than A-Rod... and more are likely to come in the 3-spot.

I would rather have my best offensive player in a pressure situation, and that's still ARod. I doubt that the 3-spot would statistically be in that position any more than any other position in the lineup.

To get A-Rod in a trade would require the perfect storm, which I think would include

a) the explosion of Scott Moore. The Yankees are going to want a replacement at third. We don't have that to give without Moore taking the next step. So he either gives it, or we have to trade for it to spin to the Yankees.

b) the emergence of Angel Guzman as a stud pitcher. Guzman needs to force himself into the rotation and interest the Yankees. If not, we're going to have to supply a top of the rotation starter from somewhere else. Because the Yankees are going to be asking for that. And I don't want to part with Rich Hill. But right now, I'd bet that's where the discussion begins.

And a whole lot more.

Not holding my breath.

If A-Rod wants to get out of NY, then the Yanks have no leverage, especially not when his contract is as much as it is.

Posted

They have a bit of leverage. A-Rod isn't the type of person to just come out and say "yeah, trade me to the Cubs or I'm opting out", so waiting is no sure thing. And waiting means accepting Cesar Izturis as our shortstop for all of 2007. Maybe he'll prove me wrong, but that sounds like a negative.

Plus the Yankees can be content to let him walk and take the draft picks, unless there's some clause to keep them from offering arbitration.

I think a lineup of

Soriano

DLee

ARod

Aramis

Jones

Murton

Barret

DeRosa

pitcher

would be nice... I like DLee in the #2 spot because he has a pretty good OBP and has some decent speed. ARod has speed too (at least he used to), so I wouldn't mind him there either, but I think DLee would respond better than ARod. Again, this is all a dream, but oh well.

Man, that would be incredible. 120+ HRs from that lineup's 1-4 would be well within reach. The Cubs would jump out to lots of early leads, which (possibly) would give our pitchers a big boost of confidence from the onset. Strike first, strike hard!

That's true, but why would the Yankees not trade ARod to the Cubs, a team that's neither in the same league as them nor geographically close to them, when the alternative is to get nothing for him.

Maybe they wouldn't be interested in what the Cubs are offering and would be interested in somebody else's offer. I was just pointing out that opting out of his deal gives ARod the biggest freedom, without too much of a risk of throwing away money.

That's true, but he'd have to take a discount to play for the Cubs. I can't imagine our budget could handle a 20M dollar player, not at least without trading one or more of Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Marquis, Lilly and not re-upping Z. If he wants to play for the Cubs as this rumor suggests, his best shot to do so without giving up much cash is to get the Yanks to eat part of his remaining contract in some trade scenario. If he cares more about the money, he should opt out and sign with Boston, who would love the opportunity to pay back the Yanks for Clemens.

I obviously don't know Arod, but I'd think after being the highest paid player and being unhappy for so many years, taking 15-17 per for 4 years or something like that and playing in a town that will worship you and a manager that you respect would be something he could swallow.
