Gary Matthews Jr.-OF-Angels Feb. 27 - 3:23 pm et

An Orlando pharmacy being investigated in connection with steroids was raided Tuesday, and it was discovered that one of the alleged clients of the pharmacy was Gary Matthews Jr.

The Albany Times Union learned that investigators have uncovered evidence that testosterone and other performance-enhancing drugs may have been fraudulently prescribed over the Internet to current and former MLB and NFL players, as well as collegiate athletes. Also on the list of clients were admitted steroid user Jose Canseco and boxer Evander Holyfield. No other active major leaguers had their names leaked in the article.

I don't think he looks like a steroid user is supposed to look, so I'm pretty sure he's clean just like Ken Griffey.

I was going to post this earlier but I figured it'd be better (funnier) if I waited.

I guarantee you someone is not going to get the sarcasm and is going to try to flame you for this.

Don't forget the immortal Manny Alexander. Although he was never charged so I suppose he has plausible deniability.

Hard to believe that Manny Alexander has gotten major league at-bats in each of the last three seasons. Even harder to believe is that none of those at-bats came while playing for Dusty-led Chicago Cub squadrons.

I hope it's not true about Sarge Jr. A lot of players live in Florida because there's no state income tax. Maybe he was just grabbing some regular prescriptions.

I wonder how Moreno is feeling about this, considering he's already been raked over the coals for giving him 55 mil...

He's feeling lucky that he possibly has a case for getting out of the contract.

good point. Has anyone actually voided a contract on those grounds? Everyone thought Giambi was gone, but the Yankmees stuck with him. Wasn't there someone else that was in a similar situation?

I don't know, but on a similar note, I wonder if we'll start to see teams try and void contracts of players who test positive. That, or include a clause that automatically voids the contract if something like that happens.

Brendan Lyons / Albany Times Union[/url]"] Last month, a New York investigator who has been tracking suspicious purchases from Signature Pharmacy flew to Pittsburgh to interview a top physician for the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers about why he allegedly used a personal credit card to purchase roughly $150,000 in testosterone and human growth hormone in 2006.

The physician, Richard A. Rydze, who won a silver medal in platform diving in the 1972 Olympics, told the investigator the drugs were for his private patients, according to a person briefed on the interview. Rydze is an internist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He also is a consulting physician for the FBI and the Federal Aviation Administration.

There are no allegations Rydze violated any laws. Many doctors are allowed under Pennsylvania rules to order and dispense prescription drugs. But investigators in New York said his orders of testosterone piqued their interest because of the large volume, his position with an NFL team and because he allegedly used a personal credit card.

``The doctors pretty much have reign to do anything they want,'' said Carmen Catizone, executive director of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

If only there would be a story about Jason Marquis using steroids...

SI has gotten more details on the HGH alledgedly ordered by Matthews.

SI.com: Gary Matthews, Jr., who had a career year in 2006 and signed a $50 million deal with the Angels this offseason, has already been linked to a customer list of a raided pharmacy. Do you have more information on him?

Llosa/Wertheim: Yes. According to law enforcement documents we've reviewed, Matthews is not just on a customer list, as was reported Tuesday. In August 2004, he was allegedly sent Genotropin -- a brand of synthetic human growth hormone typically prescribed to children suffering from growth failure -- at an address in Mansfield, Texas. We traced the address and it is the residence of a former minor league teammate of Matthews', who told us that he is friends with Matthews.

I'm pretty sure Arte Moreno is the architect of this plan, trying to get out of that albatross of a contract

I don't know if he changed his mind the signing after seeing Matthews play zero games in an Angels uniform.

No it's not. Especially if you know that Ken Griffey was rumored to have taken steroids. Therefore, when he says "like ken griffey" you should catch the "tongue in cheek". And don't reply saying you were being sarcastic, proving me an idiot.

Apparenlty, Jerry Hairston Jr. recieved a shipment as well according to SI.

Link.

According to a law enforcement document we've reviewed, in May 2004, a doctor A. Almarashi of Queens prescribed Genotropin (human growth hormone) that was sent from Allied Pharmacy -- the compound pharmacy raided in Mobile, Ala., last fall -- to Rangers infielder Jerry Hairston, Jr.

A lot of good it did him.
