From everything I have heard down here in St Louis on the radio, is that Tony and Duncan really like Franklin. I think that the 5th spot is his to lose spring training. If he pitches like he did as a starter in Seattle, he could be a nice find at the 4th or 5th pithcer spot.

He must be their version of Jason Marquis then, because the last time Ryan Franklin started in Seattle his ERA+ was 85. 88 the year before that.

I think he was relieving in PHI & CIN last year

For some reason I thought he was better then that in SEA. Still even if he is able to put up an ERA+ of 85, that is likely to be just as good if not much better then Weaver will do for a fraction of the price. Which could leave them room to take on a bigger salary at the deadline if they need to make a trade.

Jeff Weaver-S-Cardinals Jan. 26 - 7:34 pm et

Jeff Weaver will take a one-year deal from the Mariners worth $8.325 million, the same amount he earned in his contract with the Angels last year.

He can make about $1 million more in incentives. The deal is expected to be finalized early next week. Weaver picked Seattle's offer over one from the Cardinals that would have paid him about $12 million for two years.

Quick question: wasn't it Ryan Franklin that was one of the pitchers, caught using steroids? I remember him not being any good period.

Who would you guys rather have Weaver or Marquis?

Weaver for me. Both have shown the ability to crap the bed. Weaver at least throws in some pretty good years. Marquis best years do not match Weaver's best years.

Right on both accounts.

He's perfect for the Cards then. They'll protect him while he pumps back up. Just like Carpenter.

I'd rather have Weaver for one year than Marquis for three.

I'd rather have a good pitcher

True. My feeling is that if you have a pitcher on a one-year deal who sucks, the team is more willing to DFA him than a pitcher on a three-year deal.

If Marquis sucks, but Marshall or Guzman is doing well in Iowa, the Cubs are still likely to stick with Marquis due to the longer financial commitment.

If you had a pitcher, ala Weaver, on a one year deal under the same scenario, the team is more willing to cut bait and go with the youngster.

Nightmare scenario. Yeah, that would be bad. Larry's tied to this one----he's the guy who said he "found something and it's correctable."

Alrighty then, do your "magic" Larry. We're watching. :)

I rather have Marquis is a pinch hitter (not as a pitcher) over Weaver, the mental midget as a pitcher.

My guess is...Marquis will have more value as a hitter then as a pitcher.

i'd rather have the contract weaver is going to get than the one the cubs gave marquis. if contract length/$ were equal...i don't know...probably still rather have weaver.
