I'll try and make my final post regarding this whole Muskat thing and the use of "Jesus"

First off, my bad on offending those when I used "Muskat" I do agree that it is childish and not beneficial to the board.

Secondly, the stance I have on "Jesus" is a personal matter and even though I choose not to say or type it, I will not impose on those who use it freely.

A board that is free and open to many people is bound to have different opinions and beliefs, I understand that. Therefore, as long as I have the freedom to view and read I also possess the freedom not to view or read parts that are offensive to me. So I will exercise that freedom and disregard the "offensive" parts.

So, in my mind.... press on and Go Cubs!

Oh, and in regards to Floyd, I am pumped for this signing and honestly feel he will do well in Chicago!

2) If Jesus asks me to start enforcing the 2nd/3rd commandment here, you can bet that I'll take him seriously at that time.

=D> =D> =D>

I guess since Muskat has not asked you to remove derogatory posts about her we can continue calling her Muskat.

Maybe we can mix it up a little, like God Muskat damn. .

btw - I have reason to believe that Carrie's been here in the past. OTOH, I'm pretty sure it's not worth God's time to see what people are saying about Him here. And I'd hope that He's got a pretty thick skin about such things. I've never understood why He would be put out by mere mortals using his name in vain, anyway. It seems so petty. If you were all powerful, would you care?!?

Wow.

You would care if you took the time to make it one of the first three of the ten commandments. :P

Good to see that the board is attracting a broad spectrum of viewers. I agree with the others, name calling is not necessary, but it is a sports message board and it is not unexpected.

Back to the Topic:

Now the Trib is reporting that Floyd will probably start in LF.

The best guess is Floyd will be the regular left fielder and bat fifth. That's assuming off-season surgery to remove a bone spur rubbing against his left Achilles' tendon is healed. And that his 34-year-old body can take the rigors of playing daily, something he has done only once in the last seven years.

Suddenly, the Cubs' outfield has become very crowded, especially if Alfonso Soriano really can play center field.

Matt Murton was supposed to be the left fielder before Floyd came along. Most likely, he will be a platoon option, batting against left-handers.

I meant that post in levity. Sure cursing offends me, but if we can curse we should beable to say Muskat, or atleast say it without someone making a huge deal about it. It's not a filthy word, just a childish name. Cursing offends me more than seeing someone spout a bad nickname like Muskat, or Jock (whom I like). . So if we are allowed to offend the "beleivers", we should continue to beable to make up childish nicknames for Muskrats sake!!

If I was all powerful and cared about my creation so much that I became a man and died for them....yes, I think I would care.

I'm not saying you have to believe that, but thats what a good amount of people believe. When you take the Lord's name in vain, you're reducing the name of the God that many believe suffered and died for them, to a cuss word. You're equating the words "God" and "Jesus" with words like "damn" and "crap".

I think calling Muskat, Muskat, is stupid, but it doesnt carry the same weight as turning the name of people's Savior into a cuss word....But thats just what I believe and you're welcome to disagree.

Sick for real. My son was sick this past weekend and I seem to have picked up the flu from him.

starting LF'er. This will either allow the Cubs to trade Jones by June 15th or Murton.

Why would the Cubs have to wait until June 15th to trade Jones or Murton. They can do that right now if they want to.

The news keeps getting better, according to the AP Floyd's contract could be big:

He could earn $17.5 million over two years if he has 550 plate appearances each season and $15.5 million if he has 500 each season.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-cubs-floyd&prov=ap&type=lgns

Given Floyd's performance history, if he is healthy enough to reach the plate 550 times, he will very likely produce enough to be worth 8.75 million. Its only fair to Floyd to pay him if he plays. I wouldn't read too much into the "coulds" of this contract. The more telling item is that only 3 million and only one year are guaranteed. To have a bat like Floyd's available to come off the bench, 3 million isn't unreasonable.

Its not the trib per se that is saying that, the above quote is pure speculation by Dave van Dyck. The only quote from anyone in the Cubs organization in Mr. van Dyck's article reads...

"We have six or seven weeks of spring training to figure that out," general manager Jim Hendry said.

That quote is in response to what will the Cubs do with Floyd. And it is the standard response from any GM who wants to maximize a sense of competition amongst his players to motivate them to perform at their highest level. It is one of the benefits to having a proven veteran like Cliff Floyd on your roster/bench. The other presumed starters in the OF know that they better be on or they will lose playing time. I've got no problem with that. All of them are professionals and mentally tough enough to use Floyd's presence in the right way. And if they don't, then they are not playing or thinking like a champion.

There are several leaps that van Dyck takes and several places in the article where his musings fail to hold up under logical scrutiny. I'd take this one with a several grains of salt. Could Floyd wind up starting in the Cubs OF for the majority of next season? Sure. But it is likely going to take a major injury or somebody really underperforming for that to happen. In which case, so long as Floyd performs well, we will all be grateful to have him in there.

But what if you dont believe that this happened, much less is possible? It always bothers me when people say something like this.

The Floyd signing screems Todd Hundley revisited to me, but as a Cub fan I hope he does well and doesn't screw up Murton's progression.

This whole article made me sick. None of this stuff better come true. Unless Floyd clearly outperforms Murt in ST there is no reason Murton should bot be given the job. I'm sick of hearing about this lineup balance crap to. Put the best hitters in the lineup regardless of which way they bat.

Correction: there is no reason Murton should not be given the job. Period. If Floyd outdoes him in a few ST at-bats, it means nothing - Murton should have the job until he proves that he can't (which I find to be very unlikely).

Posted

The problem with Murton playing every day is that with Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Barrett, DeRosa, the lineup is stacked with righties who will all put up their numbers against mostly the same pitchers, and all struggle against tough righties. I like Murton as much as anyone but he's just not a good everyday option the way this team is constructed.

And Tim is right about God; His attitude is suspiciously human sometimes.

Posted
I worry when we give someone who is supposed to be a backup huge incentives for large numbers of plate appearances. Especially when Hendry has talked about the need for another lefty in the lineup at least as often as he's talked about his man love for Murton.

I'm worried about that too, but, Cliff Floyd very easily could have been told he's here to be a 4th OF. And the Cubs were going to pay him as such. But if someone gets hurt and we call on Cliff to fo out there 100 games this year, odds are that if he's healthy enough to be out there that much, he'll perform better than $3mil normally gets you. It's very possible that the hold up to this deal was because he wanted the extra money if he was going to play a lot and the 2 sides had a hard time reaching a deal on that end of the bargain.

Wow, that's pretty strong. You really think Floyd will be that bad? Off the bench?

At any rate I don't see Floyd making hay with the fans like Hundley did. He doesn't seem like that kind of guy to me.
