I don't see any irresponsibility here. Plenty of teasers are reported during the hot stove season. Besides, Carroll has sufficiently put himself on the line. If no trade occurs, or no report is later made that such a trade was close, Carroll has opened himself up to criticism (if not dismissal) for his flimsy reporting if he cannot defend his tease.

Yeah, I don't understand how it can be 3 big names, but he doesn't mention any of the names. The Randy Johnson thing isn't even "close" but his name is mentioned. I don't see how anything could be close and not a single word has been leaked about a big name being traded.

Hypothetically speaking of course, as much as I love Z, you'd have to be pretty stupid not to pull the trigger on that deal (IMO). Doubt LAA would offer that much if we said he was available though.

Obviously it was a bit of sensationalism on his part, but I don't see the difference between this and much of the stuff we hear from Gammons, Stark, Timmy and all the rest. It's not like it was an entire article based on that big 3 team trade with no particuliars. It was a throwaway line at the end of a ho-hum "where we're at on Christmas day" note.

Carroll just updated that a deal seemed close over the weekend but isn't as close now, which doesn't mean it won't happen as Schuerholz usually works slowly.

 

Andruw Jones is the centerpiece.

 

The Braves want to replace Jones and they want to improve last year's horrid bullpen.

 

CF possibilities include Granderson, Markakis, and Baldelli.

 

The Braves are willing to include Andy LaRoche. Some of the deals being worked on include Tim Hudson, Mark Texeira, and Dontrelle Willis.

It seems two of the names I guessed at were correct.

 

I'd like to see the Cubs get in on this if it can land Andruw Jones for CF. Furthermore, it appears the Braves are trying to build a bullpen, and the Cubs have an excess of bullpen arms.

 

The Cubs might could move players to the Braves for Jones and the Braves turn a handful of those players with some of their own prospects to a team like the Devil Rays for Baldelli.

Personally, depending on what Piniella thinks of him, I would rather get Baldelli from TPA. While he is not as good as Jones he is further from cashing in at FA. Acquiring him would also allow us free reign to trade Pie as part of a package to help some of out other needs. I also think that we would be able to acquire Baldelli for less than Jones. While I realize that Baldelli is not the equivalent of Jones I don't know if I am willing to spend the additional cash it will add to the budget to get Andruw Jones. What if we ship jones and a mid-level prospect to TPA. They put JJ into a corner outfield spot and move Crawford into CF. We would save about $10M which would go a long way to fixing other problems that we have and would allow Pie to be available to acquire someone else.

I really don't think there's much of a chance the Cubs will end up with somebody like Jones in center. However, with the way Hendry backloaded so many of these contracts, there is still plenty of room between where they are, and where they were reportedly willing to go, in terms of payroll.

 

Hendry's treatment of the CF position is the key to how excited I'll be getting about this team (unless he magically makes a big SS move). They could end up with anything from bottom of the barrel to top notch CF production.

Although I like Andruw and as instructed by the cubs am not counting on (but still hoping for) Prior in 06, its still difficult for me to trade 2 relatively cheap years of Prior for one expensive year of Andruw. And Scherholz wouldn't make the trade anyway unless Prior were healthy.

If you're talking 1-1 deals, maybe (although Z is much more valuable than those guys). But package deals make things happen. The Cubs have taken a big hit in the assets department the past few years, but they still have plenty of ammo if they really want to deal. It doesn't appear, however, that Hendry has any interest in dealing any of these young guys right now. The strategy appears to be spend cash, but not talent, in the pursuit of other talent.

You wouldn't think, but he did trade for a banged up Mike Hampton who hasn't been particularly healthy with the Braves either. Not to mention, after a few years of having somebody else pay Hampton's salary, I believe they are on the hook for the next couple years. Maybe they need to get creative to make some room.
