I still think something is brewing on the south side. It might just be something faily small like Rocco Baldelli, but then again, it could be something big like A-Rod.

Looking over the rosters of many teams recently, I noticed that a lot of teams still have work to do this offseason.

Tampa really needs to move an outfielder. They need pitching desperately.

The White Sox should be in a win now mode. Thome, Konerko and Dye are not getting any younger. Strike while the iron is hot.

LAD and Phily have too many starters, if that makes any sense.

Phily has Lieber, Myers, Eaton, Garcia and Moyer, and no room for Cole Hamels.

LAD has Schmidt, Wolf, Penny, Lowe, Billingsley, Tomko and Hendrickson

Pittsburgh wants a 1b and have been working with Atlanta to get LaRoche.

Houston is perplexing considering they were willing to bid big dollars for Pettitte, but don't seem to be showing any interest in the few arms that remain on the market.

Lots of free agents still looking for jobs.

The Sox have the arms to get an impact player. Who it might be is the big question.

I agree that there will probably be some action. I think the White Sox are more likely to get Baldelli than A-Rod.

You're wrong on the Phillies, though. They have room for Cole Hamels. They have no room for Lieber.

the biggest winners here are danks and masset

If there's something bigger, than why didn't they save McCarthy for that deal? He has a live arm, upside and is 4-5yrs. away from free agency. I guess there's a posibility TB or NY could consider Danks a better prospect, but I doubt both would be discounting McCarthy's value for '07.

I won't write it off completely, but I'm skeptical this leads to another deal.

In 2005 the Cell ranked 1st in HR park factor (1.375), Ameriquest 4th (1.263). In 2006 the Cell ranked 2nd in HR park factor (1.307), Ameriquest 12th (1.066).

I think the sox are avoiding big ticket items in this extreme market swing, an cashing in with their overrated cheap pitchers.

While Danks has a slightly better upside than McCarthy, McCarthy has proved himself at the major league level. I'll take proof over potential any day of the week when we are talking about such a small difference in potential. I think the big dealmaker for KW is Masset. However, with the bullpen they have now, I don't see how he is really going to make a difference with Jenks, Aardsma, Thornton, and MacDougal all set to be there for quite a while. This move would have made a ton of sense last offseason, its quite a noodle scratcher this year.

I think the Sox are signing Zito.

Not going to happen.

You may be right. I know a few pretty interesting things that have happened behind the scenes, so McCarthy getting traded away for nearly nothing does not surprise me at all.

He is a solid guy, much wiser and mature than his age. I think McCarthy is going to be good. I wish he were a Cub.

I really hope they trade Buehrle. There is no way he would come back and getting some value would be nice (hopefully in the form of a LF/CF/SS).

But really, I just want Haeger to get a chance.

I dont think anyone knows what the Sox are doing.

I think I have an idea. They are preparing for the future. They turned one good pitcher who will be making a lot of money soon into two good pitchers who won't be making a lot of money as soon.

IMO, KW is a very good GM and the Sox seem to have a long term plan based on financial wearwithall and baseball acumen.

I really like the move, both strategically and tacticly.

I wish the Cubs had some long term thinkers running things.

Last year McCarthy proved he can put up a 4.68 ERA as a relief pitcher.

This move REEKS of an organization that is to penny pinch. I'm sure Williams would have prefered moving Vazquez or Contreras, but didn't get the deal he wanted, as he did with McCarthy. This move also indicates that by 2009, the White Sox will have a new and cheaper rotation. So I am going to call it, I bet Mark Buehrle gets traded to the Cards for Reyes and Rasmus within 6 months.

Zito at U.S. Cellular (or whatever it's called now) would be absolutely disgusting. While the idea of him pitching at Wrigley or in Arlington was bad enough, I'd venture to say Zito on the south side would be fantastic... though only for Cubs fans.

Zito would give up a ton of homers in the Cell. Plus he'd also have Kaufman to deal with. He'd be better off in the NL east, where he'd be able to pitch in Turner, Pro Player and RFK on a semi-regular basis. Other than CBP, the NL east parks are decidedly pitcher friendly. Arlington would be horrible, but McAfee, Safeco and Angel Stadium would mitigate that a bit. If Zito went to the Sox, he would have to get a sick contract, because it would be the last big one he ever got.

THe worst would have been the NL central. Between Wrigley, GAB, MMP, and Miller, Zito might have set a record for homers allowed.

But what about next year?

I have serveral life-time diehard Sox fans and they all called me saying the same thing. It might be good for long term or might not, but the fact remains if you can win now why plan for long term.

Except for penny-pinching, I don't understand this deal. The Sox weren't that far out of it this year and a few good moves put them right back in it. Along with all of these prospects (and they are just that until they prove themselves), you've got a future of Thome digressing or retiring, Konerko regressing, and Dye leaving for FA. The only way some of these trades make any sense is if they use the young pitching in trade for young positional players (Crawford, Baldelli, Cabrera, etc.). Also, if they're going young, they had better trade Buerhle at some point.

What has McCarthy proved? It's not like he's been dominating MLB. This deal could better their team this year and in the future.

I seem to remember a certain white flag trade which had everyone scratching their heads, but turned out alright.

I also remember a few moves such as the Pod move, Uribe, and Contreras, which everyone also raised an eyebrow over at the time. Yet it yielded a WS champ.

Williams knows exactly what he's doing.
