ChicagoSports.com[/url]"]In their never-ending quest for more young pitching, the White Sox shook up their staff Saturday by trading 23-year-old Brandon McCarthy to Texas for prized pitching prospects John Danks and Nick Masset.

The two teams also will swap two lower-level minor league players.

Danks, a 21-year-old left-hander, was ranked as the Rangers' top pitching prospect by Baseball America. Masset, 24, was ranked eighth. The trade comes after the Sox heavily scouted the Rangers' farm system last summer in an attempt to fortify their pitching depth.

The acquisition of McCarthy, 23, shouldn't affect the Rangers' attempts at landing marquee free-agent left-hander Barry Zito. McCarthy was regarded as one of the Sox's top pitchers of the future, but he was uncomfortable in a relief role as well as the possibility he would start the 2007 season at Triple-A Charlotte if he didn't win a spot in the rotation.

McCarthy was an untouchable at the deadline as the Sox wouldn't deal him to land Soriano or Andruw Jones. Now he's traded to Texas for two prospects? I know Danks is supposed to become an ace as he matures, but still. I don't really understand this deal at all.

Well considering that Soriano would have been a half year rental (IMO), and after this year Jones would also priice himself out of the sox range, this deal does make at least some sense. Also those supposed deals included alot more talent being given up by the Sox than this one.

Not sure I like this trade for the Sox.

Long term, I like Danks better than McCarthy. Danks season stats look worse, but he usually sucks the first 5-10 starts at each new level, then adjusts.

Danks has better stuff anyway.

That's debateable, about who has better stuff/long term potential, but I am kind of a Nick Massett fan, and ultimately, Massett will help the Sox moreso then either Floyd or Danks.

Interesting deal for the Sox, and they are looking ahead, to when and if Buehrle leaves for the Cardinals. They better hope Cooper can rejuveniate Floyd and perhaps Danks career (didn't the White Sox draft Danks kid brother a few yrs back?), or the Garcia/McCarthy will look awful.

This trade is definately a push.

Danks is certainly a better prospect than Masset, if only because Masset projects as a reliever and Danks as a 2-3 starter. If both reach their potential, I think Danks will be far more valuable to the White Sox.

Danks has always been young for his league, which is one of the main reasons he starts slowly after each promotion.

I agree that the trade is a push, but I'd like to know your reasoning behind saying that Massett will help more than Floyd or Danks. Floyd had flashes last year and Danks is projected as at least a #2. Massett will have to take over for Jenks to have more impact, in my opinion, and I'm just not sure that's likely to happen.

This is great...Another step backwards for the White Sox..Over on their message board, almost every fan is furious and does not like this deal at all..They have the same man love for McCarthy that some guys do with Murton..This is great since I get to make fun of my friends who are all Sox fans..Hooray

Why is this a step backwards for the Sox? McCarthy wasn't a stud out of the bullpen last year.

The guys they got for McCarthy might have potential. But they are 2 or 3 years away and now it leaves that spot in the rotation open ..All their fans have the win now attitude and expectations are so high after winning the series in '05..they don't want to see the pieces they need to win it again sent away for prospects..They have the same win now attitude as we do.They dont want to wait 2 or 3 years away to see what happens.McCarthy is the only Major League ready guy in that trade and has proven to get out hitters.Almost all their fans hate the trade and I dont blame them..It might ending up being good a couple years from now.But right now its a step back. After all the trades and moves Kenny has made the last 2 years everyone was so high on him..then this season was a huge letdown because theyre sending away their pieces for prospects..If I was a Sox fan Id be upset and question what the hell hes doing.

Baseball America thinks both of them are probably ready. I suspect Williams has Danks pegged for the #5 spot. This isn't a huge step back.

The White Sox have a lot of young pitching...the Yankees need a lot of young pitching. Crede appears to be on the way out of Chicago, ARod appears to be on the way out of NY. Hmm...

If you just look at the excess pitching, I still don't see the Yanks accepting that deal.

Right now, you have the Sox rotation as Buehrle, Contreras, Vasquez, Garland and Floyd.

If you're talking a Danks, Massett and Crede.....I don't think that's enough for the Yanks.

*not to mention, I don't think ARod would waive the no-trade.

No love for Charlie Haeger? I see him sliding into the fifth spot until midseason, when another move is made and the 4-5 consist of Haeger and Danks.

IMO, good trade. Danks has a higher ceiling and getting those two has a larger impact than getting Andruw for one year or Alf for half a season.

Yeah, Haeger seems like the best fit, I'm just never sure with knuckleballers.
