Why do you hate depth? That really makes no sense at all.

Baseball, meet my pal sarcasm.

I really like height.

I actually like Cliff Floyd. But I like him more as an alternative to Jones than to Murton. I see Jones and Floyd as similar players, but with Floyd being much for of a OBP threat, something that the Cubs need...while Jones has more power.

An OF of Murton-SorianoCF-Floyd is a slight upgrade from Murton-Jones-Soriano. Of course, you still need the RH compliment and a darn good 4th OF.

The positives:

Good OBP...

Cliff Floyd was 26th in MVP voting in 2005

Some stuff I want to know.. what are his numbers at Shea? What about Wrigley?

yeah, that really doesn't do much for me as far as being a positive.

Yeah.. That was sarcasm.

Wait, I missed the press conference where Hendry said that he's 100% set on platooning Murton. Nevermind the fact that he's said nothing but good things about Murton and his playing time. Nevermind that it's not Hendry's job to set platoons --- I think it's Lou's.

Let's wait and see how things work out before we cruicfy Hendry (again).

Hendry is totally and deeply in love with Cesar Izturis. Why again must we wait to crucify him? I'm pretty much ready now.

Floyd will definately have more power switching from Shea to Wrigley.. I dont know if Jones wants the bench..

If Mr. Career .295 OBP plays well next year then that will probably mean we are the luckiest team in baseball. Slightly below average would be a stunning success.

It's so totally unlike the Cubs to sign an aged and injury prone veteran on the downside of his career. Interesting change of direction there Cubbies.

do those guys go to olemiss too?

Naw, if they went to Ole Miss they'd have beer guts and shaggy hair. It always seems that the general consensus is that southern girls are hotter than northern girls, but northern guys are better looking than southern guys. Everytime I have a gal pal who goes up north she returns talking about how hot the guys are.

Very entertaining, Wilk. I enjoyed that. Particularly the dad -> bad at baseball logic. Compelling stuff.

Thanks. I figured if I'm going sarcastic I might as well start it as absurd as possible. When the first handful of people figured I was serious, I felt I possibly represented a monster of our actual fanbase. :o I know, I know... it's all sarcasm and the internet.

I don't understand why Hendry is (seemingly) so anxious to platoon Murton, but not Jones. I'm not totally against platooning Murton, to some extent, but Jones' splits are the bigger problem.

They need to pick up a CF and platoon Jones with Murton in LF, or sign a CF platoon partner for Jones.

I think it's because he's so anxious to get rid of Jones entirely.

I agree with you. Hendry would rather have a hurt bird in the hand than a worm killer in the bush.

The grass is always hotter on the other side of the Mason-Dixon line.

(btw, OMC, thank you for the sig pic ... perfect "counter-argument" to Treeman 8-) )

The devolution of the Cubs' outfield is comical:

2003: Alou, Patterson/Lofton, Sosa

2004: Alou, Patterson, Sosa

2005: Hollandsworth, Patterson, Burnitz (w/Dubois, Murton and Lawton)

2006: Murton, Pierre, Jones

2007: Murton?, Jones?, Soriano, Pie?, Floyd?

Yes, and you can extend that to the entire team.

The downward spiral since 2003 has been astonishing. Only the Cubs.

The Marlins TRIED to match us and couldn't!

Is this a trick question? Is the answer armageddon? Do I win a prize? If so, I prefer cash to gifts.

I can see no possible way that signing LH-swinging Floyd won't cause a big reduction in Murton's playing time. If Murton is just going to sit on the bench for most games I'd rather see him traded. He's at the point in his career where the only sensible options are giving him a shot a being an everyday guy or trading him while his value is high. Having him languish on the bench will only hurt his value.

That's exactly what will happen. Cubs management has pretty much told Soriano they will give him a spot and not move him around. So, that's either one corner OF spot locked down for 160+ games, most likely corner.

Between Jones, Soriano and Murton, Murton seems like the least likely guy to get any CF playing time. Soriano would likely be next since he's never played a game in CF before. So, Jones in CF and Soriano in RF are pretty much locks with this team.

That leaves Murton, Floyd and Ward to grab at bats in LF. Most pitchers are RH, so Piniella will look to get a LH bat in there against RHP.

One scenario I should add, but doesn't really change anything, is that if Jones gets traded and Pie gets the nod in CF, that still leaves Murton, Floyd and Ward in LF.

Murton loses no matter how this turns out.

Posted

Bottom line, guys who should play everyday (Murton) will be getting platooned while guys who should be platooned (Jones) will be playing everyday. Or better yet, guys who shouldn't play at all (Izturis) will be playing everyday.

I'll wait to see the final product, but I don't like the game plan.
