We knew this was coming:

Marcus Giles-2B-Braves Dec. 17 - 9:55 pm et

Marcus Giles is set to sign a one-year deal with the Padres, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

The contract may include an option for 2008. Not only will Giles fail to get the raise he expected, but by going to San Diego, he's hurting his chances of pulling down a big contract as a free agent next season. Petco Park will hold down his numbers and make him a lot less interesting for fantasy purposes. At least he'll get to play with his brother.

Damn you, Jim, for not at least taking a chance.

???

Does Marcus Giles have a choice in the matter?

Yea, the Braves didn't offer him arbitration (I believe is the case) thus he's a free agent, able to sign with whomever he pleases.

Sure wish the Cubs would've grabbed him, he'd look nice right behind Soriano in the lineup.

No surprise there. It was definitely a pipe dream to hope that the Cubs would show some interest in Giles :(

Alot of people were saying the same things about his brother. And Jones outproduced Brian last year. Could we atleast give Derosa a chance?

Do I really need to go around saying this all the time?

Cut the guy a little slack, alright? I'm tired of this crap.

Sure would rather have Giles for a year than DeRosa for three, but I don't think its as big a deal as other issues are.

As would I, but if last year wasn't a fluke for DeRosa then he will be very similar to Giles if my memory serves me correctly. The problem is, you know what you're getting from Giles, but I'm not positive DeRosa will repeat (though I'm fairly confident).

I'm fairly confident we'll see a .750ish OPS from Derosa, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if that's not the case.

You're prob right, but I would be very happy with .280 / .345 / .455.

I think people will be pleasently suprised with DeRosa, I expect he'll put up better numbers than what Giles will put up. Gile's numbers last year were pretty sad, he's clearly on the decline. Edited by Vinestal

.262 avg .341 obp .387 slg .729 ops doesn't sound so great to me

ok, now post his numbers for 03, 04, and 05.

And where did I say Giles was great? Seriously, tell me where I said Marcus Giles was great.

Maybe it's because "White Chrismtas" is currently playing in the background as I type this, but I dream of an offseason that doesn't leave me wishing for all kinds of players over the one's we signed.

But, I suppose that's a pretty unrealistic goal. How about just addressing all the needs of the team instead?

Rumors are the Cubs are done, and SS, 2b and CF are still just as much of a concern now as they were before the offseason started. Much like RF has been a concern since Sammy.

If that's the case, which it well might be, then I'd greatly prefer Giles. My hope is that whatever adjustment he made in Texas that aided him in his big year last season is a permanent thing. If so, I would expect higher than .750ish (perhaps much closer to .800ish or slightly better) but I realize it's far from a certainty.

While he may not be great yet, he's been very good and could still get better. He's only 28 and last year's bad numbers could be partially due to the fact that he's said he hates hitting leadoff. The Braves were forced to hit him there for most of the year and that may have impacted him significantly. I'd happily take him for a one-year deal or longterm.

Don't get me wrong, I like Giles, but IMO you can no longer claim "you know what you're getting" from him.

His production's kinda been all over the map: he's gone from unremarkable (01 and 02) to fantastic (2003) to solid (04 and 05) to disappointing (2006).

I have a lot of doubts about what any team is going to get out of Giles in 2007.

The reason I wanted him so badly at this point is that I'm pretty confident about what we're going to get from DeRosa.

interestingly enough, steroid testing began in 2006.

Didn't it begin in '05?
