As most of us remember, Sisco had issues with his weight and attitude at one point as a Cub, didn't he?

Yep. He was reportedly massively overweight while pitching for Daytona at the start of their season a couple of years back. He also broke his non-pitching hand. One account was that he was really frustrated with an outing and punched a wall out of anger. Another account was that he got into a fight with JK Ryu over who had a larger signing bonus. Ryu apparently won that fight on both accounts.

This could turn out to be a Bobby Jenks-like move for the Sox in having an overweight guy with attitude problems finally reach his upside. Or he could end up being an enormous headache and eat himself out of baseball.

Either way, I'm impressed the White Sox actually got something of value for Gload.

I don't know about the fight with J.K. Ryu. If Mr. Sisco had been foolish enough to try that, there might not be much left of him. I hear J.K. is quite skilled in martial arts.

Sisco pulled the same crap here in KC he did with the Cubs. When he struggled, he wouldn't listen to anybody, this guy thinks he's the cat's meow, he has a very serious atttitude problem. Royals decided they'd had enough. Rotoworld can get as snippy about it as they want, but the fact is right now at least, all Andy Sisco is worth is Ross Gload. I applaud the Royals for moving on.

that's jake, let's get on the trolley.

There are many stories about what exactly happened but he certainly got embarassed by Ryu.

Much like Superman, the best martial artists must know when to pull their punches. ;)

Why do you think Sisco only ended up with a broken hand? :D

(Although, I heard Sisco took a swing at Ryu and missed pretty badly, hence the broken hand.)

I've heard only bits and pieces of the story, so I don't know why Sisco ended up with only a broken hand. Maybe he missed and hit the wall. Mabye someday somebody will tell all. I'd like to know myself.

I met Andy's father, a couple of years ago. There was a long thread about this that I wrote shortly after meeting him. He mentioned that Andy hurt his hand in an altercation involving Ryu. I dont remember alot about the couple of conversations that we had, if you did some digging you could probably find the post it was in the minor league forums 2 or 3 years ago. The vibe I got from his father was that he was a very hard worker but his father even admited he was a bit of a "hot head" at times. The more stories I have heard since then the more it seems that Andy was not such a great "charecter" guy. BTW I think I remember the father saying that Ryu instigated the fight by shoving Andy, he didnt have to many nice things to say about Ryu either.

Considering the source, I'm not shocked that Andy's dad wouldn't say nice things about Ryu.

But I doubt Ryu was a complete angel here.

Andy Sisco, the 6′9″ kid from Eastern Washington who pitches for the Royals, was just cut by Mazatlan. He was pitching well enough, however the team director saw Sisco munching on a couple of tacos in the stadium concourse…during the first inning of the game. Apparently, he showed up in the dugout sometime in the second, but his fate was sealed.

The above is a short excerpt from an article up on Baseball Prospectus right now.

In baseball, maybe more than any other sport, I would not give up on a guy with personality issues.

Jeff Kent is a huge jerk, but I'd rather have him at second base than Mark Derosa. I'd rather have JD Drew than Willy Taveras and Ryan Church than Angel Pagan, too.

I don't care what Sisco's previous attitude problems are, getting him for a 31 year old 1B with no value is a good move.

Talent wise, I agree, but unlike Bobby Jenks (whom, I don't like that much, as some already know) Sisco has no sense of wanting of ever wanted to live up to his talent. In other words....you got nothing for nothing, talent aside. Trust me, and Cubs fans, you guys WILL NOT like Sisco.

Come on, Mazatlan. He has to get to his playing weight in 2004!

Rob and Rany didn't like the trade for the Royals, imagine that, but Rany did pass along an email he received a couple weeks ago.

"Check this out: Andy Sisco, the 6'9" kid from Eastern Washington who pitches for the Royals, was just cut by Mazatlan. "What a bonehead! Hadn't he been down there long enough to figure they take the game a whole lot more seriously in Mazatlan than they do in Omaha? Hope he got his tacos to go."

Now, I had no way of verifying this email, but it certainly was completely in character for Sisco, who has immense talent but whose work habits are, shall we say, questionable.

I showed the story to Bob Dutton, one of the columnists in KC Star, who couldn't get anyone to confirm the story. On the other hand, Sisco hasn't pitched down in Mexico since I received the email, so you do the math.

I hear the tacos in Mazatlan are pretty irresistable.

The stupid stuff can be excused when you are in your late teens/early twenties. Not so much anymore.

His immaturity is probably going to cost him millions. That's pretty sad.

Kent and JD have performed at a high level in the majors for a number of years. Sisco hasn't.

Really? I don't think anyone is going to have a hard time making those choices either.

Btw, I would rather have Vlad Guerrero over Jacque Jones.

From a post at BP:

So I can’t say I don’t understand why Moore traded (Sisco). Sisco, like Ambiorix Burgos (traded for Brian Bannister) and Runelvys Hernandez (released), had an unacceptably high talent-to-performance ratio, and that the Royals have erased all of three of them from their pitching staff in 10 days means, if nothing else, that they’re sending a message to the rest of the organization that potential without production will no longer be tolerated.

I think now would be a great time to dangle Sean Marshall in a trade with KC. Marshall is the anti-Sisco - a mildly talented lefty who, if healthy, will reach his ceiling and provide a very solid #5 starter with a great work ethic and on-field composure. I think Marshall could blossom there, and KC would get real value for its money. He'd be a perfect fit for a franchise that is starting to get its act together.

The problem with the pitching staff the Royals had last year was the worst. Obviously, they have to improve it somehow by giving it a complete makeover. I think that's the only way it's going to improve.

Runelvys Hernandez has good stuff, but his issue is his motivation, which would be keeping himself in shape. IIRC, he showed up way too heavy last year's spring training, and the Royals sent him down to Omaha prior to that time.

The way Sisco talked he didn't want to go to the Mexican League this winter... the pitching staff is definitely going to look different this season. Then again that's probably a good thing, it can't get any worse Royals fans hope.
