ESPNEWS's Michael Kim just said that the Braves did indeed non-tender Giles.

I bet the Padres sign him

I do too. Hendry is taking a huge gamble with DeRosa. I hope he pans out.

There's nothing in the trend line of Marcus Giles' numbers to get excited about--in fact, Atlanta's decision to run away screaming is probably the wise strategy. I don't want him.

He's had 1 down year in the last 3. His 2004 isn't likely to be reproduced, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him post something a lot better than last year consistently for the next few years.

Taken from the Baseball Prospectus "Player Profile - Marcus Giles" article of Sept. 28, 2006...

His flyball and pop-up rates dropped a little bit, with that loss seemingly going into his line drives and groundballs. Using that, it’s somewhat safe to say that a few balls that landed for doubles in the gaps last year--or home runs, as his HR/F has dropped a little bit as well--have turned into line outs, and he has hit a few more grounders than is normal for him, most likely leading to even more outs. The drop in BABIP is not massive, it’s down .026, but if you factor that back into his season line, it would look like .292/.373/.421, and that slugging percentage assumes all of the new hits were singles. Is it a case of bad luck, the ball just happening to land where fielders are? From the data above, that’s the feeling I get.

If the Braves do indeed move Giles this winter, as has been whispered, then some new team might have themselves a second baseman who is still within his peak productivity, and may even get him at bargain-basement pricing, considering his "off" year. Considering this winter's weak free agent class, adding a player of Giles' caliber would be a serious upgrade in a market that doesn't offer very many of those.

now I'm not saying that I wouldn't want Giles, but that's an awefully strained analysis, and a little bit of spin. Giles LD/GB/FB % were right in line with his best year. yes his BABIP was down, but it's plummeted two years in a row while his K rate keeps going up. maybe another reasonable explanation for the phenomena described is he's not hitting the damn ball as well as he used to, for whatever reason that may be.

The Rangers did tender an offer to Brad Wilkerson prior to Tuesday's deadline.

It's the right move for the club, though it does leave the lineup a bit too tilted toward the left side. Fortunately, a healthy Wilkerson tends to his lefties just as well as righties. Unlike Kenny Lofton and Frank Catalanotto, he shouldn't need a platoon partner.

Per Rotoworld:

Cubs non-tendered catcher Jose Reyes.

Someone's going to run with the "Jose Reyes non-tendered" headline. This Reyes was only brought up in September because the Cubs had lost Michael Barrett. He's not in the team's plans, though he could be re-signed.

Didn't see it posted anywhere else.

NEW YORK (1) -- Victor Zambrano, rhp.

as if that trade could get any worse

The Mets version of Larry Anderson for Jeff Bagwell, or Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz.

Can you trade for a guy who was just tendered? Wilkerson might be available on the relative cheap. Would you do one of Marshall / Marmol / Mateo straight-up for Wilk?

Wilkerson is a FA now. He can be signed by any team. You don't have to trade to get him now. Hopefully Hendry is looking into signing him. If he's healthy coming off of shoulder surgery, he could be a great addition to this team.

Ah - my bust. I forgot that "tendered" indicates that the player is an FA. Thanks Willis...I mean EJ.

Tendered means he's not a FA. Players that were non-tendered are FA's......right?

Oops. Guess I should have read the quote better.

Thought he said non-tendered.

Yes, tendered means they gave him a contract, so he's not a FA. We would have to trade for him.

I'd say he's not worth it then. At least not as a Plan A.

Brad Wilkerson

Darin Erstad

Bernie Williams

Those in parentheses are especially long-shots, but top the list anyway. Did I forget anybody?
