I absolutely detest the idea of a fake X-mas tree. I'd rather go without a tree than put a fake one up. Until it becomes cost prohibitive to go real (even then my tolerance would still be pretty high), I will always go real.

Have you ever actually had a fake tree? They're really no form of evil.

Nope. Never have, never will. I know people who do. What's your point? I know they're not evil, but unless you spend big bucks on a fake one, you can tell they're fake. Even if it doesn't look fake, if you see a tree and don't smell the pine scent (which I like) you can tell it's a fake.

Why does it matter if you know it's fake?

And furthermore, thats a flat out lie that you have to spend big bucks on a tree for it to look real. Ours wasn't much over a hundred dollars. We've had it for about 7 or 8 years now. Real tree's cost 25 dollars at the Lions Club in town. So thus far we have saved 75-100 dollars.

Also, My granparents have a real tree and I cant smell it unless I walk up and put my nose right to it, so whats the point?

I don't have a tree.

When I was a kid I always wanted a huge real tree. Then one year my dog kept knocking the tree over and my dad made me clean in up and set it back up every time. Now I'd go fake.

The first tree we ever cut ourselves had a a little visiter on it. The cats were looking at it all day and I couldn't figure out why until I found a little mouse on it. I put him outside but accidently let the cat out later and I found him dead (the mouse) on the porch. Later I found out that the mouse owed money to my cat for some cat nip and was trying to skip town. It wasn't a natural act, it was just business.

Did I say it mattered? I said I don't like it.

I'm sorry, but I've seen many $100 dollar fake trees and everyone that I've seen was easily distinguishable as a fake. How is my opinion a lie? In my opinion the less expensive trees are easy to differentiate from the more expensive ones. Also in my opinion fakes are more distinguishable from real trees.

NOTE: So as not to offend anyone that observation has no bearing on the people who purchase said tree, just on the trees themselves.

I guess your grandparents tree is indicative of all trees, either that or my nose is just more sensitive. I've never had any trouble when it comes to getting the scent.

Wow, I really didn't know that my disgust with fake trees (again not the people who purchase them) would generate so much hostility and disection of my opinions. My apologies.

Apparently there's alot of sensitivity when it comes to defending fake versus real trees.

"I love our holiday traditions. Like the Christmas tree, where we go out and chop down a tree and put it in our living room. Kinda sounds like the behavior of a drunk man, to me. Some woman wakes up, 'honey, why is there a...pine tree...in our living room?' 'I like it! We're gonna decorate it...for Jesus. And then I'm gonna hang my socks over the fireplace. Fill 'em with candy. Maybe I'll tie some leaves to the ceiling and see if I can get some action. Now I gotta puke on that couch. Merry Christmas.'

Some people get so into Christmas that the decorate their yards. That seems completely backwards. 'Alright, chop down that tree and bring it in here. Take all these lights and put them out there. Gee, I, I really gotta get a job.'"

Yes you did put it in quotes...but no citation?

I guess some people have better things to do than watch Gaffigan's Beyond the Pale every time Comedy Central re-airs it.

I assure you that 1) our tree was not much more than 100 dollars and 2) it is not easily distinguishable as fake. That is, it doesnt look plastic and oddly shaped.

And no, the trees my grandparents have had over the years are not indicative of all real trees. On the same token, I suppose that because you have seen many 100 dollar fake trees and have picked them out as fake, that rule goes for all fake trees in that price range?

I dont care whether you like real or fake; but when you vehamently express how much you "detest" things that are part of many peoples holiday rituals, dont be shocked when you are met with opposing views.

Relax. Unless you're a tree, you really shouldn't be personally offend by my opinion on real vs. plastic trees. Who care's what I think about trees, I'm just expressing my opinion on a tree, not your family or their traditions. When I posted my initial opinion, I had no idea that your family so valued plastic trees. Had I known that, I would certainly have expressed my opinion in such a way so as not to offend you or anyone else.

In my house we had a fake tree for the longest time.

After our fake tree broke, we went with a real tree for the past few years. The only bad thing was our living room was carpet, and old, so the needles would still be stuck in there year round. We finally replaced the carpet with hardwood, so with that problem now gone it will be a lot nicer.

There are some negatives, but overall I like the real tree over fake.

I grew up with a fake tree that looked pretty good. Occasionally we'd get a 2nd real tree. Ever since I've been living on my own I've gone with the real ones, which are really good for apartment dwellers with changing space options for the tree. I prefer the real.

I will resort to quoting the Man Show (Kimmel-Corolla era):

"If I can touch them, they're real."

Artificial trees are cheaper, cleaner, less of a pain in the arse. Anything associated with the Christmas season that can be described as such is a great thing.

Fakes trees, personally. We used real ones as a kid, but after living in Arizona a couple years, we started to not miss the mess.

Also, why in gods name are people so upset with CDBears1259? It's just his opinion, wrong as it may be. I think some of you need a nap.

There is no such thing as a wrong opinion!

I refuse get caught up this again, but out of curiousity how can my opinion be wrong? It is afterall an opinion. And just to clarify, it only seemed as if one person was really upset with me.

It was a joke. It's a new concept.

Sorry, humor/sarcasm doesn't always translate well on the internet.

You're wrong, it does too.

I can't vote really on this one. Fake if it's my tree; real if it's someone else's (cleanup is a bear).

Three cats kind of put the kibosh on trees, though, especially since it's just the two of us and we're not anticipating doing any entertaining for Christmas.

(I thought you meant something not trees, too!)
