A lot depends on the type of contract he gets. If he gets a low-cost one-year deal with an option for a second year, I don't mind it...especially if the reports are true that he's worked out some mechanical issues this offseason.

A cheap deal for Marquis is a hell of a lot better than $11 mil per year for four years for Meche.

I'm in agreement here. If Marquis signs a deal for, say, $3M for one year, then I'm okay with this. I strongly believe one of the kids (Guzman is my pick) is going to break out this year. Having a disposable veteran in the rotation that can be pushed out of the way allows one of the kids to step up and grab a spot. If the entire rotation is filled with guys on 4 yr, $40M contracts, you might as well trade all the young pitchers.

I'd like to see them trade a lot of young pitchers for impact position players.

If our young pitchers had performed better in the majors last year, it would have helped that cause.

It's amazing how much play Maholm gets because of his few starts at the end of 2005.

I would much rather have Suppan or even Batista than Marquis. I don't see deals for Lieber or Penny going down either. Teams want way to much for SP right now.

nobody is saying that Marquis is better than those guys, but Suppan and Batista are both going to command 3 or 4 year deals worth $8M per year (for Batista) and probably around $10M per year (for Suppan).

If we get Marquis on the cheap that tells me Jock is gone for a bag of balls rather than a serviceable starter as i'd hoped. I can't wait for cubs.com 'jones traded for 2 PTBNL who turn out to be monkey crap 1 and his brother 2.'

I'm not going to try and convince anyone that Marquis is a good pitcher. But I will say that many people tend to overrate the latest results for a player. I'll use two points to illustate this:

1) Marquis is not nearly as bad as he showed last year.

2) Daryle Ward is not nearly as good as he showed last year.

Tomo Oka?

Ohka would be better than Marquis.

maybe. depends how far into the season we are before his arm falls off.

Ohka with an arm that fell off would be better than Marquis, because that means Guzman, Marshall, Mateo, or Marmol would get a shot, and I think they have a better shot at being good than marquis does in 07.

QFT.

People forget that Marquis was a serviceable 4th/5th starter in 2004 and 2005 because he couldn't get anyone out in 2006. Maybe he'll suck just as badly, but if Rothschild can get him straightened out, or if he can straighten himself out, he'd probably be a bargain.

I don't get why the Cubs would want him. Piniella has said all offseason that he hates when his pitchers walk people. Marquis gives up a buttload of walks. Last year he almost walked as many as he K'd. Give me Suppan or Batista please

I have a hard time thinking Rothschild can straighten anybody out..

You are all missing the point. Marquis is the LH bat the Cubs have been looking for.

The Cubs would have the two best hitting pitchers on the team. He is beings sought after for his stick, not his arm!

I just looked him up. He's not that bad. He's had one really bad year, but I am not certain that makes him a horrendous option for the back end of the rotation.

I know it. I'm just lamenting the fact that we're now "down to Marquis."

We need front end guys. We've got the backend covered.

Got the back end covered, and trailing about 50 yards behind where the back end "ends." 8-)
