looks like lilly will happen (nothing new) and floyd will happen by the end of the month

Meanwhile, the Cubs continued to lead the pack in negotiations for left-hander Ted Lilly and were in the race for right-handers Jason Schmidt and Gil Meche.

Talks with Cliff Floyd's agent also heated up, and the Cubs are likely to sign the free-agent outfielder to an incentive-laden deal by the end of the month.

Use of past tense for the race for Schmidt and Meche?

The whole article is written like that.

good point...i think you can read it either way though like they are still in the race at press time

I posted this in the Whitlock thread, but still:

The Cardinals are targeting free agent Jason Schmidt, though they may not go beyond three years to sign him.

"There's a question of how far we go, but we're going," GM Walt Jocketty said. "We'd like to have him." Agent Randy Hendricks said Schmidt was receptive to St. Louis, and that the team's reluctance to go beyond three years wouldn't be much of a problem. However, it appears likely that Schmidt will get $60 million over four years from some team, perhaps the Cubs or the Dodgers.

Once the playoffs began I had the sick feeling that would win the World Series.

I'm starting to get that same feeling again as it pertains to Schmidt.

Don't you remember? The Cards don't need good players to win the WS.

Yeah, I think its just poorly written.

Have there been any trades today? Seems like the winter meetings have turned into a free for all with agents working all sides of the room to get the best deal possible for their client, leaving little room for trades.

Seems like just one about to happen:

According to SI.com, the Mets and Royals have agreed to swap Ambiorix Burgos and Brian Bannister.

Not the Lieber for Mench blockbuster we were all hoping for.

Meh. So, who will Hendry be targeting next for CF since Lugo is off the market?

My guess is Lofton.

I would say Lofton, Church or Crisp and if none of those pan out they will try Jones in spring training to see if that is viable.

I think I like that . . .

Church has also been mentioned (for real).

I'm hoping he's really looking at Church, and not just trying to bring down Lofton's pricetag.

Supposedly, Lofton has been offered way more than the Rockies would be willing to pay

Re: The Jennings trade

For one thing, it was never proposed. For another, the Cubs value Marmol almost as much as Rich Hill, making him essentially untouchable.

Do you value Mr. BB himself Carlos Marmol anywhere near Hill? Hill is ready to go NOW. Marmol has great stuff but is still a year or two away IMO. Strangely enough I put Mateo over Marmol RIGHT NOW.

Can Marmol play shortstop? He has a higher career OPS than Izturis.

He used to be an outfielder, if memory serves me correctly.

Hendry should offer the last 4 on that list for Church and Kearns. And btw, the only thing I would change about that list would be switching Mateo and Ryu.
