Wouldn't it be great if we could sign Drew on the cheap because Boston balked and everyone else was scared or had spent their money?

And wouldn't it even be greater if he surprised us and had a relatively healthy season? :D

Drew at 11/year for four years, if he isn't cleared by the Red Sox, looks very good to me! I'd love 130 games started with him in center and 32 more with Felix Pie. Those numbers may double the nearly 9 million dollars/year output that Pierre will give you.

I doubt it. Boston may try to regotiate some "incentives" into the contract before making it official.

I would play the lottery and expect to win, if Drew was healthy for a 150+ game season.

Will Carroll is saying that the Red Sox found something they didn't like in Drew's shoulder.

That's interesting. As we know all too well, Carroll is pretty reliable in reporting such things.

I've read that twice now and I don't see what the indications are that he failed a physical. The Sox have 39 people on the 40 man, and in the last several days they've added Lugo, Matsuzaka, Mirabelli, Donnelly, and Romero, maybe they don't want to make themselves unable to sign another FA without dropping one.

Agreed.. it doesn't say he failed it, just that maybe the Red Sox are seeking some sort of protection so that the whole thing isn't guaranteed. Smart move on their part.

He's not going to succeed in Boston. For one, they're very tough on professional athletes, especially ones who play for the Red Sox. The guys they like most are ones who are perceived as lunchpail guys, like Schilling with his bloody sock, or Damon. Even Manny Ramirez, who'd never be confused for Pete Rose, at least has his particular quirk - he's just sort of goofy and laid back. And consistently putting up lines in the neighborhood of .320/40/120 is certain to win some popularity.

Drew, on the other hand, has the type of personality that won't go over well in Boston. He's perceived as a mercenary with no loyalty to any given organization, and he's also perceived as being soft. He's very cool emotionally on the field, but doesn't look like he's really having fun. He's just the type of athlete that Boston doesn't like. I think it'll probably be a disaster within 2-3 years.

I tottally agree unless he changes his behaivor. When they were pursuing him I thought to myself that there is no way this can end well. In many ways Red Sox fans are worse than Yankee fans when they don't like a player.

Who gives these players their physicals, the team doctors? Could it be possible that any team could have second thoughts about a signing and use a failed physical as an excuse?

The Red Sox and Drew are getting a second opinion.

I can't imagine the Sox pulling something that shady. Drew would have access to his own medical records (including team physicals). It would be pretty easy to prove he did/didn't fail a physical.

I don't like Drew cause he's always hurt and I hope the Cubs sign Floyd.

Yes, because signing Floyd to a short deal for low dollars to be a part time player is totally comparable to signing Drew to a guaranteed megadeal.

i hope drew wins the mvp next year.

why?

because i'm tired of hearing the "drew's going to fail in boston because he's not their kinda guy" stuff. it's weird how people somehow think they know players.

not sure how you're not doing the same thing in this case. but I think the gist of the argument is people knowing a fanbase, not a player. while generalizations tend to be dangerous, there's a history here and general sentiments do develop.

I personally would love to see Drew on the Cubs. but he's not, nor is he on a rival of the Cubs. thus, I don't give a rats ass how he does. not sure why that would be a badge of honor for you.

well apparently you purport to know he will handle the pressures in Boston just fine, so apparently you know the player.

of course you didn't say it would be a "badge of honor." but what would you call having some irrational hope that some player on a team you presumably don't care about does well simply to show you were right on a message board? sure Drew is a fine player, but do you really have this affinity for him or do you want this odd couple of Drew and Boston to work out just for the 'badge of honor' of saying I told you so?

Is the Drew signing official as the title suggests? It seems from all reports that Drew was going to get a second opinion.

People who say that the marriage between Boston and Drew will not work out are now saying something stupid? It may work out, but it's perfectly reasonable to say that it won't.

1) The majority of fans already hate the signing-being in Boston, they will certainly let him know that early and often.

2) Drew has been characterized as soft by former teammates, and I think that included mentally as well as physically (especially since Dodger teammates said that as well, where Drew didn't miss much time physically).

3. Drew doesn't do enough in the "traditional" stats to appease the common fans even if he is playing well for the amount of his contract.

4. There is still the possibility that he will get hurt for at least part of one of the next couple years, and that will make an angry fanbase even angrier.

5. The media in Boston will be all over everything, and Drew by his characterizations seems like somebody who would be affected by what the media said about him.

If it works out for them, great. It's going to be much harder working out in a frenzied city like Boston though than if he had gone to a place where the spotlight was a little less bright.

BOSTON -- Two weeks after they reached a preliminary agreement, the Boston Red Sox still haven't finalized their contract with J.D. Drew.

"There's some stuff in the medical reports that the team was not aware of," Gene Orza, chief operating officer of the Major League Baseball Players Association, said Tuesday. "It hasn't risen to the level of a dispute yet."

The text of the link from their main page is "Drew's shoulder could nix Red Sox deal."

That line is probably overstating the issue at this point, but it gives some insight as to why this deal isn't done yet.
