Thank God they got him and not us.

Keep his poor attitude and injury plagued buttocks far from here. Now he can work on being the most hated player in both leagues. Hope he gives AJ a run for his money.

Boston will win the World Series this year... their pitching is going to be awsome..and signing Drew and prolly Lugo, and if they keep Manny...They will win it all

Not if they trade Manny, they won't.

Prediction: Drew in Boston is going to end up badly. On XM tonight driving home, they had Boston fans calling in screaming about the deal, how Theo was tight with Damon over a couple of million per year (Boston fans love Damon), and now they give more money for more years to a proven injury risk and questionable motivation guy like Drew. This just won't work out well, no way.

Boston beat writers seem to think with Drew on board and Manny staying, Wily Mo is the one that will go, they'll keep Crisp, and no way do they bring back fan favorite Trot Nixon.

Prediction II: Wily Mo ends up in Pittsburgh for Mike Gonzalez.

I admit I'm kind of surprised to see that. I still prefer him to Soriano, though.

Based on the explanation I would guess that his projection for the cubs would have been significantly better than that. If he ends up putting up those numbers and Boston doesnt make it out of the first round, there are going to be riots over there.

i want jd drew, but him in boston is going to start and end badly.

Doesnt matter if it is Boston, or the far side of the moon. everywhere he has ever been, it has started well and ended up like a train wreck.

The Dodgers really want him dead. Glad he had the sense to go Boston. Would have hated to see a bean ball war started with a few of those Dodger pitchers. Let the Yanks beat some sense into him maybe.

I can tell you, Drew and Ramirez will not survive the season together. One or both will be dead. Will be the new Bonds/Kent.

am I the only one who doesn't understand the animosity toward Drew's decision to opt-out? It was in the contract . . .

All I'm saying is, some players, who really love where they play and want to stick around, are willing to act on more than just financial interest.

Latest example of this would probably be Chris Carpenter.

Drew's always moving from team to team for a guy with top-flight skills. Maybe it means nothing, maybe it does.

Not shocking he didn't like where he played - some in the Dodgers organization including Coletti didn't like him.

agreed

If Manny stays, the Boston lineup is going to be ridiculous. And they won't need Drew to be at his best to get there. Lugo is nothing special, but he's better than Gonzalez. Drew is better than Nixon. That team could be right back on top in the runs scored department, or at least contending with the Yankees (well, with Abreu there all year, maybe not).

I've read that twice now and I don't see what the indications are that he failed a physical. The Sox have 39 people on the 40 man, and in the last several days they've added Lugo, Matsuzaka, Mirabelli, Donnelly, and Romero, maybe they don't want to make themselves unable to sign another FA without dropping one.

Drew may have failed his physical.

While Sox officials and Drew’s agent, Scott Boras, have been playing word games, indications are that Drew’s recent physical with the team has raised a red flag

WOW! Wouldn't that be a story!!!!!!! Especially if it translates into Drew only getting a 1 or 2 year deal at less money!

He probably snapped his hamstring while taking his physical.

Agreed.. it doesn't say he failed it, just that maybe the Red Sox are seeking some sort of protection so that the whole thing isn't guaranteed. Smart move on their part.

He's not going to succeed in Boston. For one, they're very tough on professional athletes, especially ones who play for the Red Sox. The guys they like most are ones who are perceived as lunchpail guys, like Schilling with his bloody sock, or Damon. Even Manny Ramirez, who'd never be confused for Pete Rose, at least has his particular quirk - he's just sort of goofy and laid back. And consistently putting up lines in the neighborhood of .320/40/120 is certain to win some popularity.

Drew, on the other hand, has the type of personality that won't go over well in Boston. He's perceived as a mercenary with no loyalty to any given organization, and he's also perceived as being soft. He's very cool emotionally on the field, but doesn't look like he's really having fun. He's just the type of athlete that Boston doesn't like. I think it'll probably be a disaster within 2-3 years.

What?

Schilling wasn't "liked" by the Boston media, until the sock. Before that he was a cocky guy who provided great quotes.

A consistent .900 OPS player is unlikely to succeed?

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he'll hit in that lineup in that park.

I lived in New England long enough to know what things are like there.

You're completely wrong about Schilling. He wanted to go there to win. Before he was signed, he went onto the Sons of Sam Horn message boards and talked to Red Sox fans, and he continued to do so throughout his first year (at least). Regardless of what the media thought of him, fans loved him. If Drew doesn't stay healthy and hit very well, the fans will turn on him.

True, but the fans liked him. For the most part, they already hate Drew. He won't put up enough in the "traditional stats" to change their mind, and if he gets hurt again they will really hate him. What the fans think is not important for some players success, but for a player like Drew who is somewhat sensitive to those sorts of things that constant pressure will wear on him-he has probably 2 productive seasons there, maybe 3, and then he will probably want out and be traded. If he gets hurt, that could cause him to be forced out even quicker.
