That's $14mil/yr. Just $3mil less than Soriano.

If he stays healthy, he'll be great. I still wonder why it always seems JD Drew is trying to get away from the team he is currently playing for.

They got all the players I wanted in Drew, Matsuzaka, and now Lugo.

Lugo? Did I miss something?

Per rotoworld:

ESPN's Steve Phillips says he's hearing free agent Julio Lugo will join the Red Sox.

WFAN reported earlier Tuesday that Lugo had a four-year, $36 million contract from the Mets. The Red Sox weren't believed to want to go that high, but if they felt thet couldn't land a shortstop in a Manny Ramirez deal, they might have believed they didn't have much of a choice. Dec. 5 - 6:21

am I the only one who doesn't understand the animosity toward Drew's decision to opt-out? It was in the contract . . .

All I'm saying is, some players, who really love where they play and want to stick around, are willing to act on more than just financial interest.

Latest example of this would probably be Chris Carpenter.

Drew's always moving from team to team for a guy with top-flight skills. Maybe it means nothing, maybe it does.

I thought the deal was 5/65. There were a few people on the radio earlier saying he gave the Cards a home-town discount. In this market, $13mil/yr for a Cy Young is probably fairly cheap.

That's why I singled Carpenter out.

well they already had him under control over the next two years for salaries of 8 and 9.5 respectively iirc.

If I had the choice between Drew and Soriano for almost the same price. I would deffinitly pick Soriano he is much more reliable then Drew and adds more areas to the game then Drew.

on the surface yes, but as has been pointed out, alll they really did was add three years at 50 million - his ages 34-36 years I believe. not nearly as good a deal as it initially appears.

Wish we would have signed Drew and traded for Church. Instead of hosing down the fans in the bleachers they could have lectured them about how their binge drinking and illicit, pre-marital sexual activities are sending them straight to Hell!

We could've had Drew + Durham cheaper than Soriano + DeRosa, and had a shorter long-term commitment too. Argh.

:?:

Anyway, Durham, given his age and position, seems like he is ripe for a breakdown, and Drew, the last couple of years not withstanding, doesn't have an exemplary health record.

IMO, I'll always appreciate a player who adopts his team's city as a hometown and agrees to play there for less. But I'll never look down on a player who won't . . .
