Methinks if Hendry was 100% certain that Schmidt could at least put up the numbers he put up last year injury free, he'd already be signed.... but the reports about him dropping 4-5 MPH off his fastball worries me a bit.

Also, if we were getting the Jason Schmidt of 2003, with his 0.98 WHIP, Hendry would have thrown him 4/80 already.

He is surely not the same pitcher he was a couple of years ago.

Hill

this whole winter meetings business is killing me...i want something to happen for the cubs and i want it to involve schmidt signing with them.

Why on earth would you want that? You, my friend, are crazy.

The Cardinals are targeting free agent Jason Schmidt, though they may not go beyond three years to sign him.

"There's a question of how far we go, but we're going," GM Walt Jocketty said. "We'd like to have him." Agent Randy Hendricks said Schmidt was receptive to St. Louis, and that the team's reluctance to go beyond three years wouldn't be much of a problem. However, it appears likely that Schmidt will get $60 million over four years from some team, perhaps the Cubs or the Dodgers.

Let's hope that's just Jocketty blowing smoke

I don't have anything creative or new to add, but:

4/60 is a fair deal for us, JH. Schmidt would make enough of a difference to next year's team, that that is certainly a fair price. Get on it

I'd start off with Hill in the #3 slot. If he maintains what he showed last year, move him up by the ASB.

I'd like to be in a position where it's a question as to who should be #2, Hill, Schmidt or Prior.

Man, that's a nice dream.

i think a pitcher's "slot" is more about respecting the vets and such than anything else. Early days off throw off the "ace vs. ace" matchups and it never gets back on track

True.

Though if Hill is even close to his level the 2nd half of last year consistently, you almost have to bump him up.

If Prior is healthy, he IS the #2. Hell, if he is 2003 Mark Prior, he's #1. Of course, I only bring this up as we're on the topic of "nice dreams: :)

(Seriously, if we nab Schmidt and Prior is healthy, we have a truly excellent rotation)

Seattle P-I

At the same time, the Mariners may have a fight on their hands if they are going to bring Jason Schmidt into the fold. Schmidt is being pursued hard by St. Louis as of Tuesday, and the Cardinals seem to believe they can get the deal done.

The other quote posted from Jocketty seems to indicate otherwise. Here's to hoping their source is way off.

gleeman's rotoworld blog from the winter meetings-

During a press conference that I sat in on, Tony LaRussa repeatedly stressed that the Cardinals need rotation help, and apparently general manager Walt Jocketty took those words to heart. St. Louis is now in the mix for Jason Schmidt, adding the Cardinals to a list of suitors that already included the Mariners, Cubs, and Dodgers. It's easy to see Schmidt's price tag skyrocketing in a pitching market that has the Cubs and Blue Jays bidding back and forth for the right to overpay Ted Lilly and Gil Meche.

I guarantee Schmidt wouldn't get more than 4 for 48 mil from the Cards. That's the best offer I could see. A more realistic would be 3 for 36 with an option for a 4th at 12 mil.

If the Cubs are serious about Schmidt, there is no way the Cardinals outbid them. None.

st louis post-dispatch says the cardinals have a 3 year offer on the table to schmidt. if the numbers are true, hendry better not get outbid by the stl on him.

The suggestion comes as the Cardinals continue to push for a deal with premium free-agent starter Jason Schmidt, whom the club has offered a three-year contract that could be sweetened by week's end, according to sources familiar with negotiations.

Jocketty plans to speak with Schmidt's representatives, Alan and Randy Hendricks, before leaving the winter meetings Thursday afternoon. What one source described as "positive momentum" could lead to Schmidt, 33, landing with a new club by week's end.

Speaking generically, Jocketty said, "We're a long way from getting a deal done, but I feel more encouraged than I did a week ago."

The Cardinals, Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners are believed to be finalists for Schmidt.

Jocketty described the Cardinals' position as "flexible" regarding Schmidt. Club sources indicated general partner Bill DeWitt recently eased budgetary constraints.

The Cardinals have standing three-year offers to Schmidt, Miguel Batista and Jeff Suppan. The Mets continue to have interest in Suppan, who continues to attract strong interest, including latecomers Toronto and Houston. A source familiar with talks said that "the status quo" exists between the NLCS MVP and the Cardinals.

The Redbirds' offer to Schmidt is believed between $10 million and $11.5 million a season.

The only way the Cards land Schmidt over the Cubs is if he hopes that benefitting from Ecksteins scrappy grittiness is worth the paycut.

I thought that was the reason why the Cubs brought in Mark DeRosa, or was that Theriot's job?

I just don't see how the Cards can outbid the Cubs for Schmidt. My guess is...Schmidt goes to Seattle, and St. Lou re-signs Suppan.
