The Big Donkey is going to play 160 games, score 100 times, hit 40 HR, and drive in at least 100. He will also walk 100 times, and strike out at least 150.

That, my friends, is production. Ugly, but efficient.

Efficient?

It takes him sooo many pitches per plate appearance just to get his thing done. Now Juan Pierre, that guy was efficient! You see the way he grounded out to second on the first pitch? Phenomenal!

If I had any sort of photoshop skills, I would have stuck a "43" on the back of Pierre's jersey a long time ago.

Perhaps "effective" would have been a better description?

I'd rather have Murton than Dunn.

That's just crazy talk.

It's not really that much of a stretch if Murton can start putting up his post ASB numbers on a consistent basis. He was every bit as good as Dunn offensively in the 2nd half, provides much better defense, and costs a whole lot less.

I think Murton did a LOT of adjusting last season, without too much help from the staff (intermittant platooning, obvious lack of coaching). I think when he finds himself this year there will be a lot less grounding out/into DPs, as he seemed to do every AB when he was in the horrible slump.

I have faith in Murton. I think he is going to develope into a .310/.380 hitter with 20+HR, 80-90 RBI capabilities. Possible All-Star.

A lot of people advocate Murton for #2, for example, but Murton hits into double plays at nearly twice the rate of Dunn..

Maybe that is the case because Dunn swings and misses more balls the Murton, perhaps?

I'm convinced that the Dunn-haters don't like him for aesthetic reasons.

I don't like Dunn, cause he is not a smart hitter. In fact, I will say he is Mark Bellhorn with power. If Dunn would ever learn that it doesn't take a HR on every at-bat, I wouldn't mind Dunn, but Adam---like Zito with his curveball---is in love with HR, regardless of it helping the team or not.

That's a pretty big "if," though.

I want Murton to do well, but as I've argued in other threads, his batted ball data suggests he's not going to become a middle-of-the-order hitter.

He could end up being a very valuable player, but I have doubts about the Cubs using him in the best way possible.

Action shots really bring it home.

Yeah, which is exactly why he'd be a better #2 hitter. A strikeout counts for one out. A double play counts for two.

I'm dunn arguing about it. As long as Jim Hendry is GM, there's no way the Cubs would acquire such a hitter anyway.

This reminds me of the FJM article that said something to the effect of, "Travis Hafner is not a good team player, he accidentally hit 24 home runs for the D'Backs."

And if there is a man on 3rd, with less then two outs, who would you rather trust at the plate; Murton or Rob De...I mean Adam Dunn?

You're wrong. Dunn is NOT a hitter, he is a masher. Joe Mauer, Derek Jeter they are hitters, Dunn is not.

That's awfully finicky. They all excel at their roles which involve hitting the baseball, they are all hitters.

Agreed, Dunn should used for scoring runs, not drinving in runs. While he is capable with the HR, that is pretty much it. I think we will see too many missed opportunities with Dunn at the #5 spot. Personally I would bat Murton 5th before Dunn.

You pointed out his faults as well as his low OBP, is this not what we would like to seen brought to this team? Not a free swinger

Huh?

As far as the topic goes it is a resounding NO!!

Also he has a low OBP.

he at least was always gritty, which is what counts more than anything in baseball. Also there are home runs.

Excellent use of "also there are home runs"

Personally, I think Dunn would be ideal to put in the fourth spot between Lee and Ramirez.

Unfortunately, it appears the Padres are in discussions for Dunn and the Reds want Linebrink. The Padres want Freel too.

Link.

Cincinnati and San Diego briefly discussed a deal that would send Reds slugger Adam Dunn West but, as of Monday, there was no match. The Reds and several other clubs continue to inquire about Padres reliever Scott Linebrink. San Diego would be interested in versatile Cincinnati outfielder Ryan Freel.

Assuming the Reds want Linebrink, would they take Howry from the Cubs instead.

Would the Reds bite on Howry + Jones + Mateo for Dunn?

I think they would, but I'm not sure Hendry would do that trade.

I'm tempted to say that Linebrink is better than Howry. Plus, then the reds don't have Dunn hurt them every year, if they didn't learn from the Pirates and Ramirez.

Well, after checking stats, that's just not true. But Linebrink is half as expensive and three years younger.

How on Earth did this thread get to be 9 pages long? I can sum it up in three lines:

Dunn K's a lot and his defence sucks, but he walks a ton and hits for great power. Some people think if he just simply K'd less, he'd be a better hitter and they would be wrong. He'll never play for the Cubs.

Did that about cover it?

What are you talking about? This is the shortest Dunn thread in a while. The Douchebag McGee guy hasn't even show up yet.
