Hmmm...Peter King just mentioned on NBC's pregame show that he thinks that Lance Briggs could be the first player in the history of the Bears to get the franchise tag.

If that happens, I'm guessing we'll have a very angry and unhappy Lance Briggs on our hands.

He already seemed to be unhappy in the offseason and in training camp.

Giving Briggs the franchise tag would not suit well with him, at least I wouldn't think so.

Why would it not? Wouldn't he be paid among to top 4 Linebackers in football?

So by my count, Rex has 6 really good games, against the Packers, Lions, Seahawks, 49ers, Bills, and Giants.

He's had two mediocre games against the Jets and the Vikings in Minnesota.

He's had 4 terrible games against the Cardinals, Dolphins, Patriots, and Vikings.

But for some reason only the four bad games count. That is frustrating.

And yes it frustrates me, but to completely ignore the fact that he has had some good games is annoying.

Anyways, Bears need to win tomorrow, hopefully big too. And I really hope Grossman plays good game number 7 tomorrow night.

Maybe the bad ones count because 5 of the 6 good games have come in the first 7 weeks and 3 of the 4 bad ones have come in the last 5 weeks.

He started getting bad when teams learned to put pressure on Grossman and force him into making bad decisions (thanks to Denny Green and Arizona). When the pressure came, so did the turnovers. Then recently, its been a confidence problem as Turner has made the offense more conservative and Grossman has been shakey.

He's not the same QB he was in the first 5 weeks of the season, you Grossman defenders need to realize that the gameplan to stop Rex is out there and works almost every time.

Possibly, but if they decide to tag Briggs, wouldn't that eliminate any other discussions with any other team? If he wasn't really happy with the team, I don't understand why you would do that to a player. He wouldn't be able to explore FA at all if the tag was placed on him.

At least that's how I thought the Franchise Tag went.

We do. We also realize that it's not all on him, that there are ways to overcome this game plan that Turner hasn't done a good job on and that Griese might not be that great either.

Guesswork by a Packer fan. What?

Where did you get the notion that Briggs doesn't like Chicago? I mean, i guess he would like the be the number 1 linebacker elsewhere, but he still likes playing with the Bears if he had the pay that Drew Rosenhaus wants for him. (Which is more than Urlacher btw  )

Yay, a post that has not one, but TWO rolleyes. Congrats.

Oh, I don't know. Maybe by the fact that he wanted a new deal and he was displeased with how the team was treating him? Also, I was pretty sure that the Bears were going to make Harris their #1 priority in the offseason in terms of getting a new contract worked out. One of my Bears fan friends told me a couple of weeks ago that they would more than likely have to pick one or the other and they wouldn't be able to sign both. I'm not a Bears fan, so I wouldn't know. I took his word for it.

Instead of rolling your eyes at me, why don't you tell me YOUR definition of what the franchise tag is?

Well, the four bad games count as much as the six good games. It's not like those bad games shouldn't count. The troubling thing is that Rex has regressed over the last several weeks. Right now, Rex is playing at a level that is unacceptable. This is a big game for him. Good Rex should be able to put up a respectable performance against a bad team such as the Rams. Even if it's a ball control performance against a team that is weak against the run, that's OK. But if he is throwing picks on Monday Night, I can't think of a reason not to go to Griese.

I know it's doom & gloom, but really and not optimistic at all for the Bears to get past the 1st round of the playoffs. Short of Grossman reverting back to what he could be or Griese inexplicably doing great, something doesn't feel right. I can't put my finger on it, but I'm not confident at all.

I hope I'm proven VERY wrong.

The Tommie Harris thing is what killed my spirit. I just don't know how good our D is going to be without him in there. The good thing is we have depth. But depth can make up for Tank Johnson or even Alex Brown. Depth cannot make up for Tommie Harris.

While I am bummed about Tommie Harris, defensive line is the one area on the Bears in which they can afford an injury. Between Ian Scott and Alphonso Boone, I'm not sure that there is that big of a discrepancy. Tommie Harris is good, but this is an area in which the Bears have quality back-ups. If anything, Tank Johnson has been the premier inside defensive tackle over the last couple of weeks.

Lance Briggs would be well worth a franchise tag. The Bears should do everything within their power to retain him.

No updates on Harris?

Unless they put him on the IR, I'd imagine they won't really have a good sense of things for a few weeks.

Vasher's hamstring is getting better, but it sure doesn't sound like he'll play Monday night. Nor should he.

Yes but they said he was going to Dallas or something to check out his hammy, did they ever have any news after that?

Tommie will see the specialist in Dallas this coming week.

I agree with everything you just said. Hopefully this is bad stretch and he comes out of it these last four games.

This is the biggest thing with Rex's bad games. One shouldn't expect him to maintain his early season play nor expect him not to have bad games, but one should expect him to at least level off to a more normal play. He's getting worse and worse, and that's why the bad games are so concerning.

What it would mean to him? It would mean he'd get top 5 linebacker money to play with the best defense in the NFL, with a linebacker who's probably making him look better than he actually is. Heck, it would probably get him a better contract after 2007.

You act like he's Randy Moss who is completely displeased with where he is. There have been no quotes (that I've seen, I haven't been hunting down Lance Briggs articles, sorry) that say that. He's shown every indication of enjoying being a Chicago Bear.

And if you had to choose between Tommie Harris and Lance Briggs you choose Tommie Harris every time.

Sorry for my tone in the earlier post.

I think he needs to sit and clear his head. It's always this way with a player-----"oh you can't sit him it will blow his confidence" or "he's only going to get better by playing"

He doesn't need to "get better." He needs to take a break and gain some perspective. A player's confidence is always much more destroyed by going on the field and failing miserably than by watching and learning.

Tom Brady was benched this weekend, btw. Brett Favre was benched I think twice (might have been once) last season. I think we need to do what's best for Rex, and right now I believe that is letting him sit and learn without pressure for a little while.

Ugh.

Can you guess who will be ESPN's celebrity guest Monday night? If you said Jim Belushi, chances are you've seen this act before.

It's becoming a cliché. I like Belushi, but does he have to make an appearance nearly every time the Bears play on Monday night? Doesn't Chicago have any other celebrities?

Also, Belushi's Chicago connection isn't the only reason he will get some time in the booth Monday. His show "According to Jim" happens to run on ESPN's sister station, ABC. Basically, it will be an extended promo for the program.

The whole celebrity deal is puzzling and one of the major raps against ESPN's presentation. I'll let Sylvester Stallone slide since Kornheiser got him to do a "Yo, Adrian" last week. But James Denton? Christian Slater?

ESPN says the Monday broadcast is a different animal and that the celebrity guest is a way to lure the casual fan. I don't see it.

Are there really viewers who are flipping through the dial just to check out who the celebrity guest is on Monday night? Doubtful. And the exercise is offensive to the football fans who just want to watch the game.

Spare us the celebrities, ESPN, and give us the game.

Please cancel that appearance. Please.

Brady was taken out of a game late when the outcome was already determined and after he was getting beaten up.

Grossman doesn't need to sit and clear his head. He needs to play well and keep playing, or be replaced.

Seriously, how do they think they are benefitting the broadcast. They aren't attracting new pop culture worshipping viewers to MNF with these cameos. All they are doing is advertising his show to the viewers who are already watching. And I know that a significant number of people have to turn the game off when these guys come on. It's unbearable. They barely show the game action, they talk about nonsense and ignore the field. They should offer Sunday Ticket subscribers a station with no broadcasters.
