As much as many of you dislike Lilly, I'll be incredibly disappointed (especially considering Schmidt's off the market) if we don't get him. We can't afford to have a rotation filled with rookies like last year.

i've read that lilly has told friends he wanted to go back to the yankees so who knows if the cubs can do much besides drive up the price.

The Yankees worry me tremendously. If they put an offer close to ours, I'd think he'll take it. I'm not nearly as optimistic about our chances of snagging Lilly as I was before I knew the Yankees were involved.

My gut tells me he's a Yankee by tomorrow morning. His agent says he meeting with the Yanks today, which tells me Lilly is saying you have one more shot to sign me or else I'm a Cub.

To me, it would be no great loss. Guzman is likely to put up similar numbers to what Lilly would anyway. Lilly is about to get #2 money to post #4 or #5 numbers. Id rather we didnt waste the money.

I can't speak for Hendry, but I'm absolutely not comfortable making that assumption. We don't know if Guzman can stay healthy, and we don't know if he can produce like Lilly has.

Gooz has never ever pitched over 100 innings. Ever. And some of you expect him to be a starter next year? Huh?

Seeing as there are several "similar" statements, I decide to retract my statement, seeing as Primetime already gotten smack a few times.

Screw relying on rookies like last year..Chumps like Guzman and Marmol had all year and tons of starts to get expirience and correct themselves..They didnt do a single thing and we ended up in the basement...Im not gunna wait for them to prove themselves..That could take til lthe year 2014..Who knows, they might be awsome down in triple A but they will be nobodys in the majors..I dont care about money, just go out and get Lilly, just to have someone with expirience and a transsition from the AL to the NL, he will be way better than both of them..Guzman and Marmol belong in the pen.nowhere else

Word!

Indeed. Guzman'a 10 starts (coming off of injury at age 24) and Marmol's 13 starts (at age 23) clearly spell out how they will perform next year. Much more so then Meche's and Lilly's pathetic careers.

Man, if Gooz and Marmol hadn't started last year, the Cubs would have been saved.

rosenthal's latest

The Cubs are trying to sign both free-agent left-hander Ted Lilly and free-agent right-hander Gil Meche, and they continue to pursue a number of left-handed hitting options.

Center fielder Kenny Lofton and left fielder Cliff Floyd are free-agent possibilities, and the Cubs also are talking to the Nationals about a trade for outfielder Ryan Church.

Just give them Marmol for Church straight up.. I dont see why they have to talk 3 days about it

He said it was a false alarm. He claims he misheard a producer who told him that Lilly was down to the Cubs and the Yankees.

Ooooh, some *very* interesting little tid-bits in that one.

"He likes to hit," O'Brien said. "Jim Hendry was saying, 'Tell Ted, we're still not finished. We're going to go out and get a good left-handed bat.' And Ted said, 'Why? You've got me.' He likes to think he can hit."

Among other things. Ted Lilly thinks he wants to reverse the curse, huh?

I think he's waiting for that Yankees offer, because after all, NY would be a preferrable destination to Chicago unless the money is more here.
