"This man gets on base an awful lot," Colletti said of Pierre. "He gets 200 hits or more, is a great guy on a club and, like Nomar, has great qualities as a human being." - LA Times.

No TJ Simers or Bill Plaschke piece yet. :(

I'm glad Pierre is gone, if only for the sole reason that I'm sick of reading sports journalists talk about how "hard" he works, and the "dedication" and all that jazz, instead of actually looking at his numbers or his noodle arm.

I guess I'm just sick in general of the new wave "folk scrappiness" sports journalism.

Also, not sure if we're ones to talk, but HORRIBLE contract.

So does this mean that one of the Dodgers young OF is available? If so, a Murton for Westbrook deal and then a deal for Kemp wouldn't be too bad.

A Murton for Westbrook deal, no matter what is done to cover it up, is bad.

Also, it's refreshing to see that other teams make completely moronic moves as well. It's no surprise that Coletti spent significant time in the Cubs organization.

In all seriousness 5/45 for Pierre at this stage in his career might be the worst contract I've ever seen. There are Hampton type deals that look awful in hindsight, but no hindsight is necessary to see how bad Pierre's contract is.

Good job, Colletti. Get rid of Drew, re-sign Pierre.

You can't hang the loss of Drew on Coletti, that wasn't his contract. Depodesta made that stupid contract, similar to A-Ram's

He did sign Juan though....

Of course he could have just resigned Drew and not whined about being betrayed.

The deals Arizona signed a few offseasons ago were pretty laughable. Ortiz, especially.

BTW - wait 'til GMJ signs his contract for new records of ridiculousness.

I eagerly await the Plaschke article about this.

:D

Me, too.

The Grady Little signing column was a classic.

I'll go out on a limb here and say there will be a reference to a dirty uniform in said article.

Cannot agree more.

Get the chance to read about how the man "affectionately" called Slappy utilizes his blazing speed and great heart to will his team to victory. How he was a "big part" of the 2003 Marlins, setting the table that whole season with his eyes ablaze, his legs of controlled fury, and blah blah blah.

It's going to be hilarious.

The Ortiz deal was pretty funny, but Slappy gets my vote. Even if he maintains his speed it's a terrible contract, but he'll be 30 next summer, so it's likely he'll slow down. Every part of his mediocre skillset is entirely dependent on speed, so if he loses half a step he becomes the world's most expensive high school baseball player. In fact, I'd lay even odds that he's out of baseball before this contract is up.

I am absolutely glad that we exchanged a hard-working, good-natured, inspirational teammate who hits nothing but singles and steals bases, for a player who is just as hard-working, good-natured, inspirational teammate but instead hits tons of extra-base hits and steals bases.

To put the contract, in context let's compare Pierre to Willie Wilson.

Pierre's BA/OBP SB for ages 25-28.

305/361 65

376/374 45

276/326 57

292/330 58

Now, Willie Wilson's BA/OBP SB for ages 25-28

303/335 34

332/365 37

276/316 59

301/350 47

While Pierre was a hair better, both had OBP tied to BA and only had the advantage of being slap hitters with speed.

So, what can the Dodgers assume to get for the next five years...

well Wilson went

269/312 24

279/320 59

262/289 55

253/300 24

280/354 24

That's some ugly production for 9 million if Pierre follows Wilson's track, regardless of what the market might be.

You also have to look at Pierre's SB%. It's already at the far low end of tolerability. If it gets even slightly worse no intelligent manager will let him run much. Without stolen bases Pierre starts looking pretty pathetic, especially for $9M per year.

A textbook example of an unnecessary dependent clause.

I was talking about public perception, not my own. IMO a ballplayer is pretty lame if his primary selling point is stolen bases.

page 2 on espn has a great article talking about the ridiculousness of this signing and the free agency in general...

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=keown/061121

one of my favorite quotes...I think something like this was posted earlier, but funny nonetheless...

The Dodgers paid more than $18 million for two more years of Nomar Garciaparra and are in the process of chasing it with $45 million over five years for the right to watch Juan Pierre play center field.

Chew on that for a minute, because it might be the most amazing one: $9 million a year for a singles-hitting leadoff man with a good glove, a poor arm and sporadic knowledge of the strike zone. Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said Pierre is a guy "with great qualities as a human being." Sounds like Gandhi, and he couldn't drive the ball into the gaps, either.

If Pierre loses a step and a half at some point over the next five years, he'll become a late-model Omar Moreno. In more modern terms, the Dodgers will be paying $9 million for an outfield version of Neifi Perez, only without the glitzy power numbers.

I guess they agree with everyone here - that although Soriano might be high, this is even higher.

Ned could have had JD back if he acted professional. He didn't want Drew and played up the whole being betrayed part, he wanted to make a stamp with this team with the money freed up from JD's contract.

That is quite a stamp.

A stamp only a mother could love.

Or a die-hard old school the way it's supposed to be played GM who despises the new math.

Ned Colletti says:

Pierre gets on base an awful lot, he had 200 hits, steals bases, he's a great guy to have on the club, a great quality human being," said Colletti. "If we're able to come to terms, he would be great at the top of the lineup with Rafael."

I don't know what everyone around here was bitching about all he time - right there you got yourself a highly paid major leauge baseball executive saying that the Frenchman had a good OBP......................duh
