Hmm so we have like 10 different places saying the Cubs offered Schmidt the 3 year deal, then Bruce Levine says we never did...Were do these other places get that news from? Pretty big since its a headline on SI.com and on rotoworld.com

It's Bruce Miles, and all the other sites got their information from the San Fransisco Chronicle. They probably got their info from Schmidt's agent, which Bruce said was probably a false rumor that the agent thought up.

I doubt that SI.com and ESPN would have it as such big news if there was only a blurb about it in the San Francisco Chronicle. Rotoworld, yes, but not SI or ESPN.

Thats from the main baseball page from a reporter over at SI.com

Yea I wasn't aware Bruce Miles' word was absolute truth these days.

i wasn't aware john heyman's word was the absolute truth these days.

I'm going to violate my own edict here and jump in on this thread one more, and last, time. To those who have PM'ed, I've tried to respond (in a nice way, of course), but I'm having trouble getting my messages through, and I've asked the Admin. for some help.

Nobody is the ultimate authority here. The Cubs may indeed land Schmidt eventually. That's not the issue here. All I said, and it's been corroborated by two different radio reports, is that the current information about an alleged offer to Schmidt, which was put out by national outlets, is not accurate at this moment to the best of my knowledge.

See you on other threads.

i understood this whole thing the first time, but i got 5 bucks someone will still not get it and say something now...welp either way i hope the report of an offer is true, but i could see it not being too

I'll trust Bruce and the other local guys before a national media outlet like ESPN any day.

Everything that has been posted thus far seems to stem from one report that has been reverberated in the echo chamber (other media outlets, etc.). I don't know how anyone could trust a place like rotoworld.com for any original reporting. They aren't even a media outlet.

If the local guys say it aint so, it probably isn't.

My brother and my dad both emailed me asking me if I was happy that the Cubs signed Schmidt, b/c they said they saw it on Sportscenter. Looks like ESPN is really jumping the gun.

Whoa, this is getting out of hand.

Well, the local guys from SF say it is.. I guess the point is, someone's wrong and someone's right. Who the hell knows.

no, ESPN did not say that, they just reported the 3 year, $44M offer that was originally reported by a newspaper in SF.

Mark Giangrecco on the 5:20 Abc News Sports update said the cubs offered J. Schmidt 4/44?

i know this is false, as said by Bruce.. but where did Mark get the 4th from ?

True. Yet, I'd presume the local SF guy probably talked to Shmidt's agent knowing full well the Cubs are in spending mode.

Just my un-educated guess though.

That's what I told them, and I added that the original report may be false.

Its funny how when one rumor from one sourse gets spread into 10 rumors from 20 sources very quickly simply because people don't listen or read fully. Especially when everyone wants the rumor to be true.

Or someone talked to Schmidt's agent and someone talked to the Cubs, which is probably more likely.

I'm going with the people who have Cubs contacts on this one.

Tom Waddle said the Cubs offered Schmidt a 5/60 deal.

 Is it just me or is this really blowing out of proportion?

Its just you

Why would Schmidt's agent leak the news of the Cubs offer, if Schmidt was serious about wanting to come to the Cubs? Would seem that a leak of this sort would work better to boost an offer by another team, that Schmidt would really want to go to.

Win-win for him. He can still work with the Cubs, privately telling them whatever he wants, but have a bigger $ deal waiting if he ever wants to let it sway him from Chicago. Then again, I don't think he naturally wants to come here.

Offer him Josie Maran...he'd sign so fast it would make your head swim.

Is Truffle willing to give her up?

hell no. not negotiable.

I'll offer up Giorgia Palmas, but you'll have to throw in a hottie to be named later.

You know call me a homer, but if the choice is between the Mariners and the Cubs, I really think the Cubs are in a better position for success in 2007.
