Soriano is not very good.

I never thought I would have somone tell me a 40/40 guy is

not very good. Priceless.

He's 30 years old and he has a career .280/.325/.510 line. I'm not saying he sucks, but he's not worth 8 figures, never mind the astronomical rumors that his NY hype and Boras have brought on.

Good God I hope this is wrong. If Hendry signs Soriano for 8 years, I'll cry. I'd rather see him dump 20 million a year on Soriano for 4 years than 8 years at 17 million a year.

That contract is not going to be pleasant in about 5 years.

If we manage to make it to a World Series and win one, I don't care how many albatross contracts are on this team.

Well, if it's true, Hendry is answering all of the critics who complain he doesn't get any top FAs. Also, I guess he doesn't just overpay for mediocre players.

I think he smashed his piggy bank to do this.

Somewhere Carmen is crying.....

And so are all knowledgeable cubs fans.

I could care less if he sucks at 38 still with this team, the fact is that for once Hendry's going after the big fish with guns blazing.

I'm much more worried about his sucking at the age of 31 relative to that deal.

Maybe he will.

But on the other hand, maybe this is a sign that he's learned his lesson relative to guys that seem to have an injury bug following them around re: JD Drew.

Soriano and Drew were the two guys that gave us the best chance to win now, and getting one of them would be a great accomplishment.

So you throw over a hundred million at a guy who's already 30 and has had exactly one great season? All I see is a player who has never shown an ability to get on base at a good rate, can't play defense, and played out of his mind SLG wise for one season. How is that more dependable than JD Drew, who will be cheaper for fewer years, much more consistent, and better defensively?

Hendry just hasn't shown an ability to understand why OBP is important.

but he's not worth 8 figures, .

Of course he's not.

If you're being sarcastic, he's most definitely not worth 8 figures.

If you're not, then why are we not more upset about giving him an obscene amount of money and years? Hendry finally paying big bucks to a "premier" FA means nothing if the guy isn't top of the line like Soriano isn't.

I think it'll depend on the market and how Soriano does. If the contracts keep going up than it won't be that but.....it could be a huge noose around the Cubs neck if they go down or Soriano does a Sosa or Bagwell.

His stats are what they are but Soriano is the type of guy that can carry on offense for 3-4 weeks on a run. Juts beware of the upcoming criticism when he strikes out frequently on the low-and-away slider.

One advantage to this I suppose is if Drew does go to Boston Manny going to Chicago is a decent possiblity.

I'm not being sarcastic. He isn't worth 8 figures. Hell most players in baseball are not worth their contracts. He is overpaid, and probably overrated, but still, match him up with Lee, and Aram...and we have some major thunder in the lineup now.

Rosenthal only said that the 8/135 figure was what Soriano was seeking, not necessarily what he is going to get. I refuse to believe that he'll get 8 years, which doesn't mean Hendry won't pay through the nose.

I would have felt comfortable giving this type of contract to Vlad Guerrero a couple of years ago, but Soriano at age 30?...no way.

No, he's not major thunder, that's the point. For crying out loud, Barrett is probably just as good if not better offensively after they both regress from their career years.

the paramedics just revived me. they said i had a massive brain hemmorage and heart failure. they found me lifeless with my limp fingers stuck on foxsports.com reading about soriana singing an 18-year deal worth over $500M with the cubs. i am now recovering from my stroke/heartattack/anerysum. he will be 57 years old when the contract expires.

never in a million yeaars did i envision us shelling out $73M to ramirez and $135 to soriano. hell as officially frozen over.

So you are ignoring Sori's 2004 and 2005 seasons, yet harping on Drew's injuries from 4+ years ago? If Sori does not reproduce his 06 season then he isn't going to give us the best chance to win now, definitely not as good as if Drew reproduces his 2006, 2005, 2004, etc.

Or Isiah Thomas has taken over the Cubs.

$17 million could be a bargain 8 years from now. . .

It's expensive, but the Cubs aren't hurting for money. . .

And it doesn't cost them any players. Now they can trade for another impact bat or 2 or 3 type pitcher.
