MLBtraderumors.com

Here's an interesting tidbit buried in a Giants notes column: the Cubs "reportedly are open to the idea of trading catcher Michael Barrett for pitching help." I can't imagine they'll part with Barrett cheaply, but does that mean they are willing to go with Henry Blanco and, say, Geovany Soto behind the plate?

I'd be fine with this, but it better get a true #2 starter in return if they do trade him. If they are looking at trading him now though, he must not be in their long-term plans, so I'd rather trade him this offseason if we can get good value for him rather then simply lose him next off-season.

Check the source. I'm not going to worry about a MLBtraderumors.com rumor about Barrett.

If they do trade Barrett, they'd better get something good for him. You don't trade one of the best catchers in the league for nothing.

I wouldn't want anyone from the Giants (except, of course, Jason Schmidt). But we all know we won't be able to trade for him.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that Hendry is tired of Barrett and his hot head antics these past two seasons. If he's decided he's done with Barrett, you know Jimbo will unload him for a package of saltines. That said, so far there hasn't been a serious smear campaign, so that's a good sign.

What players has Hendry traded away for clubhouse reasons? Maybe you could make an argument for Farnsworth. Some would say Sosa, but I don't agree with that. I think it is more likely that Hendry didn't want the contract of a rapidly declining slugger (though he ended up paying a lot of it anyway). Hendry isn't going to deal Barrett just because he decked A.J.

That would be a good thing. We can sign him without giving up any players at all.

This isn't that surprising.

The Cardinals turned a back-up catcher into a starter, a guy who can't hit either. They played him every day and he ended up as a postseason hero. We have to emulate the Cards, because that team won a championship. Duh.

They didn't really turn a backup catcher into a starter. Yadier may hit like a backup catcher but he has never really been a backup.

Benji Molina and Lieberthal are both free agents. Granted they would be steps down offensively, if Barrett could net the Cubs a good enough pitcher, it would be worth it.

This would only be true if we decided to completely ignore the year 2004.

There are lots of reasons one might choose to ignore 2004: the Bush reelection (if he really won), Van Helsing, the Britney Spears/Kevin Federline wedding. etc.

However, Yadier did back up Mike Matheny that year, and I saw him do so with my own two eyes.

Maybe we could explore a deal centered around Barrett and Peavy? What could we package together-

Barrett+Jones+Marshall+Gallagher+Cedeno?

Sign Molina

Gives SD a starting LF, and C- also not locked into Barrett so Kottaras can spend the full year in AAA-

1. That's one helluva lot to give up to just get Peavy. He's good, but I don't quite think that good.

2. Kottaras is not in the Padres system.

barrett & gallagher alone are too much to give up for peavy imo. giles is a waste of money at this point in his career.

Send Barrett to NY with Hill and get A-Rod.

I don't think he's going to agree to be traded though. They're questioning his manhood in NY. He has to show he's not a loser.

Buster Olney and Rosenthal now talking about the cubs trading Barrett for pitching. Apparently Colorado have asked for Rich Hill in exchange for Jennings (not happening) Would Atlanta do something like Barrett and Prospects for Hudson and Jones??

No, cause they have both Brian McCann and Jared Salty (weird and LONG last name), so ATL have no interests in Barrett. No expand it to include a third third team needing a catcher.......
