He's not a type A or B FA, Lou spoke shortly after his signing about wanting a solid bench, and when we were going nowhere we did him a favor by trading him to the contending Twins. Anyone else interested in trying to re-sign him?

Not really-I don't mind a clubhouse issue when the player is very productive. When it's simply a bench player like Nevin though, the problems in the clubhouse simply aren't worth the extra production he would give you over another bench player.

I wouldn't mind him back at the right price, but didn't he sorta burn the bridge after he left? Or am I mistaken?

"I loved it," Nevin said of his brief stay with the Cubs. "Besides not winning a lot of games, there are great people here. It was fun to be part of a great, rich tradition. Playing in front of these fans was unbelieveable and something I'll never forget."

Seemed like he enjoyed his time here and wouldn't mind returning for the right price.

Oh, alright, I'm mistaken. I don't know how productive he would be and how much money he'd want. He's not very mobile anymore, though he can't be too much worse an option than John Mabry.

Its been mentioned that Mike Lamb might be non-tendered. He is entering his final year of arbi and would probably make 2.5M or so if the Astros keep him. Hes left handed with major splits will probably be a better than Nevin if used correctly and cheaper.

I hate that guy! Only because he sucks yet always kills the cubs - or so it seems. well, he hit that weak grand slam off prior anyway . . .

If he was used properly he could be quite productive.

OPS vs righties

04- 843

05 - 734

06 - 877

Even in his bad year thats pretty decent for a backup who made 1M. He doesn't really fit that great on our team, but hes good, cheap insurance.

Nevin will be looking for a starting job somewhere. If he can't get one, it's a possibility that he could end up back here.

He's very versatile. He can fill in at 3b, 1b, COF, and catcher, none all that well. :D

But, he does have a respectable bat. Klesko is another option. He probably won't be an A or B and a lot of teams might pass on him as well.

Klesko would have to prove he's healthy, though.

Both would be good bench options.

If I'm not mistaken, Bruce Miles has been pretty blunt in here about his dislike of the guy's personality.

Here is an example of what I am talking about. This is from Bruce's Q & A session:

Do you have any inside information on the behind the scenes issues that Phil Nevin hinted at?

No. I'm just glad he's gone.

Craig Wilson.

Starter.

He probably could be one, but he's 6 years into his career and has just 1 season as a starter. I'm not sure baseball people view him as an everyday guy. He averages under 400 plate appearances a year.

If I was a small market team looking for a significant bat to add to the lineup, I'd definitely think of him as a potential starter. But if the Cubs went out and signed him to DeRosa money, they might beat out the Royals of the world who would be interested in him starting.

I think he'd make a good Oakland A.

I'd be happy having Lamb or Nevin on the bench at the right price. I'd be even happier if we had both - good sock from both sides of the plate can't be a bad thing.

I'd be happier if Hendry went out and got impact difference making starters, and put the utility/bullpen on the backburner.

Agreed.

I'll take Bruce's word for it. If character is an issue, I don't want Nevin.

I thought Nevin was a good clubhouse guy? Maybe he doesn't like the press all that much. If that is the case, then I don't blame Nevin at all.

Yeah, I think Bruce's thing was that Nevin had a very haughty attitude with reporters. He mentioned Nevin having the "I'm a jock, you're not" kind of thing going on".

The only other thing I've heard about Nevin is that he tends to gripe if he's not a regular.

I can actually speak somewhat knowledgeably on the subject of Phil Nevin. When we took out trip to Chicago this summer, we happened to meet Phil at THe lodge. HE was a nice guy--talked to us for about 2 hours and drank a few beers--actually that was the worst thing about him--he let us school teachers buy him beer after beer and never offered to get us a round :-k Anyways, he made it clear that he still thought he could be a starter in the league and he did not want to come back to CHicago in a reserve role. I am not saying that the market will not dictate this as his only option, but it is his goal to get an everyday job somewhere

Funny and true ending to the story--as we were leaving I said--we would love to have you back next year--you are the type of role player we need/ HE said--I really want to start somewhere.... (now remember--I am half in the bag at this time) and I say--like where--Pittsburg or KC??

THe next morning when the boys and I rehashed the story I realized how that probably came out bad but I really was just curious where he thought he could start :D

Anyways, that is my Phil Nevin Story!
