The bidding has begun....

The Philadelphia Phillies appear to be the most aggressive organization pursuing Soriano. The Philadelphia Daily News reported on Monday that an offer, believed to be for five years and $73 million, has been made.

The first thing that jumps out at me? That contract looks awfully familiar. I'd be happy if the Cubs matched that, but that's starting to get close to the limit for Soriano IMO.

I want no part of Soriano for 5 years. I want so little part of him that it's almost like I want negative part of him. I want less than a part of him.

i'd probably rather give drew a 3-4 year deal than soriano a 5-6 year deal, but i want one of those two guys. i could live with a 2b/cf combo of soriano/roberts or durham/drew.

I'd try for both. Drew at 3/37.5, Soriano at 3/46.5. Sign 1 pitcher, trade for another.

Soriano is the 2nd best position player left on the market. That being said, his real value is nowhere near his market value.

Drew is the best position player left on the market. His real value is much closer to his market value, which happens to be lower than that of Soriano.

They are, in fact, about the same age (with Drew being 2 months older).

I want nothing to do with Soriano until the point where Drew is no longer on the market. At that point, I explore trade options to improve SS or CF. If that fails, then and only then would I be willing to put Soriano as a priority.

IMO, I see no way that both of those guys will take that short of a deal-that would put them in free agency at the wrong time, and I think at least Soriano is looking to get a long-term deal. Drew might also, but we haven't heard much about his demands-but I doubt 3/37.5 will do it, considering he just opted out of 3/33, and many teams would love to have his bat.

I'd rather go for Drew and Durham than Drew and Soriano.

I don't mind Soriano, because we do need another bat. But I'm concerned about his performance over the life of the contract.

That's pretty much exactly the way I feel.

Ah, to be the Yankees and not ever have to worry about a few crappy 75 million dollar contracts...

That's right, nobody likes 40 40 guys. we need walks. LOL

I kind of like guys who play most of the time. Drew is still the most overrated guy out there.

I'm so sick and tired of Soriano getting credit for being a 40/40 guy.

He got caught stealing 17 times!

That's a net detriment to his team everytime he started running. Why some people want to praise him for running often even when he was not very successful at it is beyond me.

The 40+ HR's? Yeah, he did great there.

The 40+ steals? Those weren't worth jack.

One significant injury in the past 3 years, and it was from a beanball. I'm not too overly concerned.

2nd on the part about there being no chance in hell any premier FA takes 3 years. Soriano, Drew, Lee, Schmidt, Zito, probably Matthews are all looking at 4 years minimum. This is their big payday, and it's coming at a time when MLB is flush with cash. There's no sense in taking a short term deal and risking that teams are still going to have a huge surplus to spend on a player who would then be past his prime.

I am. The first year of a contract seems to be a problem with him. He'd be a great year to year guy, but he isn't. I want someone who plays all the time.

FYI, Soriano has a 78% stolen base percentage for his career.

That's a good enough percentage where his base stealing helps his teams.
