I hope he returns and does awesome

I hope so too. But I fear he will just look pathatic. I'd rather remember Sammy as he was in 1998.

I can see a number of teams being willing to give him a non-guaranteed contract with an invitation to spring training. If he'll take it, then he might earn his chance.

I doubt many teams would be willing to guarantee him a spot.

this will be the best sports movie ever

sammy comes back, now 195 pounds of lean muscle, and breaks barry bonds' single season home run record with 6 bombs in game 163 as the [insert team here] beat the cubs to go to the postseason

I would buy that movie and watch it. Repeatedly.

Seriously though, i hope he comes back and does awesome. That being said he's getting up there in age and i'm pretty sure it will be a pathetic display so plz stay retired sammy.

Yeah, but I'm really curious to see how he'd do.

I want him to reach 600.

Does the 163rd game, the tiebraker, count for season stats?

I can see Florida perhaps being a good fit for Sammy. Outside of Willingham, their outfield was pretty brutal this year. The Marlins will be looking for a low-cost, power hitting outfielder to spell Amezaga, Hermida, Ross, and Abercrombie (the outfielders that played the most after Willingham). Those 4 player combined to put up .239/.302/.364/.666, so they could use all the help they can get. If Sammy can come back and prove he can still hit, he could be a huge help off the bench or spell the young guys when they struggle.

Plus, Sammy chasing 600 would be a significant draw in south Florida where there's a substantial Dominican population. I would think that as much of a hero Sammy became in the DR, maybe he would be held in higher regard among his countrymen than your average baseball fans. Of course this is just speculation on my part.

The likely guess would be that if Sammy comes back, it would be as a DH for a small market AL team. Best of luck to him!

Yes. Because I remember before the 163rd game in '98 the guys on the news were talking about Sammy possibly hitting 4 HR's in one night and catching McGwire.

If he'd take a non guaranteed deal, and his bat speed is good, then why not a platoon with Jacque?

Geez, what did I just say?

Sammy vs LHP in 2005: .370 OBP .471 SLG

Jacque vs LHP in 2006: .261 OBP .416 SLG

I'd do that in a heartbeat.

he does have a better arm than Jacque, in a relative way

Stay far away from baseball, Sammy, and please stay the hell away from anything that might link you to steroids because I want to believe you didn't do it and that's easier to do when there's nothing but circumstantial evidence pointing at you.

Yes, but remember: He was already on the decline in 2005, and he's a year older and also hasn't faced live pitching in over a year. He's done. Kaput. Finished.

Yeah I can see it now, and I miss game 163 because newly divorced Reese Witherspoon is busily feeding me grapes one at a time and fanning me. 8)

if we're doing this, we might as well do this. reese witherspoon is not even close to acceptable for that role. and "fanning" is definitely the wrong gerund.

Sammy was never the same after the Salomon Torres beaning, I'm convinced that, more than anything else, hastened his decline. After that, he bailed out terribly on pitches, he got so frustrated he used the corked bat, and eventually he couldn't get around on the fastball anymore because he was always overcompensating for the breaking ball down and away.

If Sammy could hit 250/330/450 and accept a bench role, you bet I'd take him back as a 4th outfielder/pinch hitter, why not?

Yeah, after that he started standing WAY back from the plate and pitchers kept getting him out on the outside corner.

I'd kill for a Cub/Sammy makeup. I always thought all the stuff that happened (beaning, cork incident, nagging injuries, etc.) represented much of his decline. Steroids or not, he could have one last run in him after resting his body for a year. Especially if he were a bit humbled and willing to listen to advice from the coaches.

Never happen though :(

oh Reese is acceptable for any role as far as I'm concerned!
