Alou in his last year with the Cubbies had to be one of my favorite players. I was frequently critizied for being and advocate of him. I didn't want him to leave and hated to see Dubois/Holla platoon. Ironic how 2 years later we want him back.... just odd!

Agreed.

Hendry chose a crappy pinch hitter and a career minor leaguer to replace Alou.... that's what pissed me off moreso than just letting Alou walk.

everyone's a career minor leaguer before they make it to the major legues.

I realize that. I was referring to Dubois's potential, not his past.

i dont think it was unreasonable to think he had the potential to be much more than a career minor leaguer.

Maybe not. But it was pretty unreasonable to assume he would replace Alou's production, which is exactly what we needed him to do since Hendry did such a crappy job upgrading the offense elsewhere.

Remember, it was supposed to be Dubois/Nomar vs Alou/Gonzalez. But then Nomar's groin exploded, and Dubois didn't perform like we hoped.

It was also Dubois/Burnitz/Nomar vs. Alou/Sosa/Gonzalez.

I would've been fine with giving Dubois a shot if Hendry had upgraded the offense. But he didn't. So going with an unproven Dubois was pretty dumb. Especially when Alou wanted to come back.

I think signing Burnie was Hendry's real mistake, rather than giving Dubois a shot in left.

Jermaine Dye would've been a nice RF addition instead of Burnitz. :)

Especially when Beltran and Drew were available.

It's so cute how everyone is falling into this Alou frenzy.

I'm sorry if you don't like productive players.

And you are worried about Alou getting hurt and not being productive??!?

Alou can still hit, he's proven that. The problem with signing Moises would be to hope and pray he could play a full season without getting hurt, and I don't think he can play a full season without getting hurt anymore.

If he's signed as the fourth outfielder, that's not as much of a problem.

7 million for a bench player is a problem.

He's still a guy that can put up a great average and still give you a decent amount of HR's a year. I'm sure a starting job will be open to him somewhere.

3 million for a broken down reliever who can't pitch on consecutive days is probably a bigger problem.

Spending 10-12 million on RF is not a problem if it's productive.

You may be right. But then again, if we offered him more money to be the 4th OF than another team offered him to start, would he take the extra cash for the limited role.

My guess is most NL teams will be worried about his age and durability in the field and won't pay him big bucks for that reason. So, it would have to be an AL team with an opening at DH that signs him. I can see Cleveland, Detroit, and Texas...maybe Minnesota. How large of a contract will those teams offer?

I can see the Cubs topping what those teams will offer even if they are planning on using him in a more limited role.

I really see the Astros most likely to try to get him.

I dont know where you got the idea of Moises Alou taking a bench role.

He'll turn 41 next season and hasn't played a full season in two years. Teams are going to be reluctant to sign him as a starter and pay him big bucks with those concerns. A limited role where he gets 90-100 starts would be ideal for him, both in keeping him healthy and keeping him productive.

Now, whether or not Alou sees it this way, I don't know. My guess is that his offers will be limited. Surely some teams will offer a starting job, but it may be at less money than what the Cubs could pay.

I'll say I'm certain the Cubs won't even pursue this. Hendry lacks the creativity to think of this move.

I dont see any of those teams signing Alou. Why would anyone in their right mind sign a injury prone 41yr old to a $7 million contract?

Vance said 4-5 million, not 7! Where did the $7 million number come from?

I highly doubt Alou gets a deal less than 5 million. 5 million for a bench player is not a good idea either.

Do you think Jones would be happy about a platoon role?

I can't be bothered to read the rest of the thread, so I'm going to post questions you've already answered.

Why do you think he won't get injured?

Why don't you think he'll cost a lot?

What about the fact that he's a bastard?

Probably not, but he doesn't hit lefties well at all. I don't know how Lou will tell him that, but I'm sure he'd find a way.

I think Vance thought that Moises could make appearances in 100 games. That is a bench player, but it's more. I think it would be reasonable, but that's my opinion.
