I was watching ESPN News and they reported the Cubs interviewed Ryne Sandberg before hiring Piniella. I wonder if Ryno would be considered for the hitting coach job. I'm not endorsing that, but it is interesting that he was one of only a few people to get an interview for the manager position.

Correct me if I'm worng, but didn't Ryno go to the Cubs asking to be considered before Baker was hired, and the management wouldn't even interview him.

I'll bet this was just a polite, appeasement interview.

Yes, I understand he was simply told they wanted somebody with experience.

On XM 175, Kevin Kennedy asked Jim Hendry about who the candidates were. Jim mentioned Girardi, Quade, Brenly, and Listach and then said Ryne Sandberg approached him and expressed interest. Jim said he talked with him and then told him quite frankly that they wanted "someone who had done it before."

yes, because someone who had done it and failed enough to be fired (very hard to do in baseball), should be given another opportunity to fail...

Hendry should just admit he makes all his decisions based on how to sell tickets... not how to build a winning team...

I don't think that's true.

Are you saying having Piniella as manager will sell more tickets than having Girardi or Ryno? Because I don't think that is true.

are you suggesting Ryno deserved a legit shot to manage this team?

#! Ryno as manager would probably sell more tickets..so that argument doesn't hold water, IMO.

#2 if Ryno truly wants to manage, then he'll pay his dues and get experience in the minor leagues.

I agree. Ryno was told by the Cubs in 2002 that if he wanted to manage, he would need to get experience. The only thing he's done to accomplish that since then is work as a guest instructor during spring training.

I love Ryno. He was my favorite player for a long time, but I don't see him having the desire to put forth the effort to do what the Cubs want before they hire someone as a manager. If he wants to manage, he needs to offer to manage one of the minor league clubs, work as a roving instructor, or something like that.

Furthermore, after reading Sandberg's antiquidated ideas for Yahoo sports, I really don't want him managing this team.

I'm one of Ryno's biggest fans, but I'm not sure he's right for the team. He probably should have spent the last few years managing somewhere if he wanted to have another shot, because then he might have got the chance this time. Oh well.

Hitting coach might be okay for Ryno. He always had a good approach at the plate, so maybe that translates to the team. Who knows.

I'd hate to see Ryno as the manager. He'd get fired and I'd hate to see cub fans bash Ryno like they've bashed Baker.

Hitting coach for Ryno, please. Or Iowa manager with Quade joining the big league staff. :D

I think even managing Iowa is too much at this point. There's others in the organization that have earned that. My guess is Listach might get promoted to Iowa manager, and Sandberg could manage at AA or A.

However, I don't think Sandberg has any interest in doing that. My guess is it's either Chicago or bust for him, and frankly if that's his decision, I'm fine if he's never more than an ambassador for the Cubs and never making decisions for them.

While I have no idea how good a manager Ryne Sandberg would be (I'd probably be against hiring him); I've said it before, having previous ties to the Cub organization - especially by a popular player like Sandberg - probably counts against him being considered for an important role with the Cubs.

Number one, I don't think management wants to be on the opposite end of hostility if things go wrong, especially considering that Cub fans - being the sentimental lot they are - would most likely turn against them if things went awry. Secondly, I think the Cub front office is genuinely skeptical of all thing Cub-like. They might not know how to build a winner, but they are cynical enough to not want to entrust their team to some former Cub.

And what dues did Joe Girardi paid when he when he was hired in Florida last yr?

I do agree that Sandgerg should get "experience" as a coach, but to use the "paid his dues" quote on Sandberg and not on somebody like a Joe Girardi, is meaningless.

Am I crazy, or wasn't he at least a bench coach under Torre? More than Sandberg can say.
