I wonder if the low dollar figure per year is because Piniella

Is it really that low? Lots of guys make much less. Plus, Lou took himself out of the running for every other available job. He had very little leverage when it came to money, other than saying he'd rather stay in broadcasting. Once Torre was officially retained, Lou made it clear he wanted to be the Cubs manager. It's not like they had to convince him to come back to the job, or steal him from another team.

I wonder if the low dollar figure per year is because Piniella has some sort of out clause that allows him to go to the Yankees. I hope it's not the case.

I'm indifferent to Piniella's hiring. I hope Henrdy surrounds him with enough talent that Piniella's managerial flaws are hidden.

Time to get some good players.

It might have something to do with the fact that Piniella is (I think I just read this last week) still getting paid by TB next year. I think they still owe him $4.85-ish Million IIRC, meaning that he's still going to make the difference of 1.85 from TB next year. I wouldn't be surprised if his salary was more like 2 million, 3 million, 4 million so that he gets more toward the back end of the contract. The Cubs could have negotiated a lower front-end and backloaded it because of his contractual circumstances. We'll see.

Lou Piniella has been hired as the new Cubs manager per ESPN radio in Chicago. Cubs will supposedly have a news conference tomorrow to make it official. Unfortunately, per the same station, Larry Rothschild will be back as the pitching coach.

Awesome! Now let's start constructing the team. Lou is as good as any of them and comes with an expectation of winning. I'm back to being excited about Cubs baseball.

dusty had the same thing "expectation of winning" I am still a cubs fan and until the team is wearing a ring I won't believe an slightly above 500, AL manager is right for us.

Hope you are right

I wouldn't necessarily call him an AL manager....I mean he did win the World Series with an NL ballclub

Are you aware that the "AL manager" does have a World Series ring from the NL. And by all accounts that I've been hearing this past week, Piniella is the "exact opposite" of Dusty Baker in pretty much every facet of coaching, philosophy and personality.

I blame the Yankees for this. If they'd fired Torre and hired Lou like was reported, we'd be talking about Bruce Bochy right now.

I've heard opposite personality, but I've seen nothing to indicated opposite in the other things.

Maybe you're just not listening as hard as I am then.

Possibly, but then again, maybe I'm just not hearing things that aren't really there.

WSCR say it's a 3 year 9 million dollar deal. Not a bad deal.

WSCR is bush league. I dont believe anything they say anymore.

I want this dude and that hardcore WMVP hater to argue. Who was that guy again?

And how much better do you think Bochy is then Piniella? What the hell has Bochy done in 12 years on the Padres?

I should have mentioned in my original post that it was "expected" that Rothschild would be returning - not definite yet. I hope that at least this part of it falls through.

did anyone read the fireLou blog already out there?

While I think the premise of a "fire Lou" site is redicolous this early,

the "mock interview" litterally made me spit pepsi on my monitor.

PINIELLA: I like my soup hot, my stool loose, my ballplayers tough, and my prostate small, God damnit!

Yeah, you obviously hear everything, so I must have imagined it.

What is it that everyone hates about Larry Rothchild? What is it that you expect from a pitching coach? I dont have any problems with Larry, I hate that they signed Lou though he's way wrong for this team. A pitching coach can only do so much if he has a bunch of guys that arent listening and a bad manager thats going to make him look pretty bad. I have a feeling that most of the pitching problems with the Cubs were not due to Larry, at least I dont blame him.

I would like a pitching coach to not turn one of the best collections of young talent into one of the worst pitching staffs in the game.

Never said I did hear everything. I've just yet to hear anything to suggest Lou is the opposite of Baker, other than his fire and brimstone approach.
