and claim Justin Hampson from the Rockies.

The Associated Press[/url]"] The San Diego Padres released infielders Mark Bellhorn and Manny Alexander, and right-hander Scott Williamson, on Thursday and claimed left-hander Justin Hampson from the Colorado Rockies. ....

Hampson made his big league debut with the Rockies in September and went 1-0 with a 7.50 ERA in five appearances, including one start.

They should have just said the following:

"We are releasing all of our Ex-Cubs. We want to have as few as possible on our roster next season. We feel it will give us a better chance to win in the future."

Bellhorn is worth an invite to spring training I still think he's a great weapon to have off the bench to go along with The Riot.

Maybe. He's far to inconsistent. His age 27 season was great. But 2004 was his only other good year. He's 32 now, coming off his worst season yet.

2006

.190/.285/.344

Is Geoff Blum a FA? I wouldnt mind the Cubs adding him to their roster.

Why?

Geoff Blum is a valuable Left-handed hitter off the bench. He can pretty much play anywhere on the field. He has some power in his bat, and he puts the bat on the ball. I love his versatility.

Those things also describe Jose Macias. Blum has been terrible offensively for quite some time.

hehe, no offense to your idea, but every phrase of your post is a "bad player" cliche. :)

Which is a nice way of saying he doesn't deserve a roster spot.

When putting the bat on the ball results in an out over 70 percent of the time, it's not a valuable skill.

Blum's OBP for the past three years: 293, 296, 266. He also doesn't have much pop either. Slugging over the last three years: 366,345, 348.

For those numbers, we might as well let Cedeno have that spot. He's just as versatile as Blum.

And the person who compared him to Macias was right on the money.

Macias' OBP in his last three years: 274, 293,273.

Macias' SLG in his last three years: 316, 376, 353.

No Blum has no value. He's pretty worthless when it comes to evaluating a major leaguer.

I know. Just pointing out he's been pretty bad. Consistently bad, which is worse.

I gotta draw the line here - I'm coming down NOT in favor of versatility. All it has done is cause us trouble the last 4 years
