''Listen, winning is important, obviously. But I've gotten an opportunity to see the other side of it. It's a fun side.''

What does that mean?

I think he was referring to his year off. I don't understand what that has to do with winning though.

I think the other side of it may have been when he was in Tampa. Referring to the idea of managing a team with younger talent and watching them progress to becoming serious Major Leaguers.

Note, may comment may be meaningless if he was going out of his way to play the vets on that team instead of the young players at his disposal.

Another thing I noted in his telecast was that he seemed quite fond of the running with fast runners and encouraged the use of the hit-and-run. Not sure if we will enjoy him too much if he is trying to make things happen the whole game.

He may like the challenge of the Cubs job, but I don't like the challenge of trying to watch him manage them. Edited by Banedon

If he takes the challenge of the Cubs job, I'll be challenging myself to take a huge break from baseball. And I'd really rather not have to do that.

I think he's just keeping all his options open.

At the same time, I think he wants to goto a team willing to spend $100 million to win. He is not looking for jobs like Washington, where the team isn't equipped to make a few moves and win now. Whereas the Cubs fave the financially ability to make those moves. Now if he can get on the same page as Jim Hendry as far as offseason acquisitions, then I think he'll be our manager.

I'm not optimistic, but I'm going to give him the chance.

I don't like how Hendry operates. But it's not impossible to win with his style, just more difficult.

Oh god please no.

Keep that dunce away from this team. Please no. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.

Piniella is to old for this job. We need someone who will be here for a long time and end this constant changing of managers on the North Side. He is already 62 and he is going to cost a lot more than Girardi. Save that money and use it for players.

If Piniella is "actually" interested in the job with the Cubs. Then I'm just going to take a stab at this. Jim secretly told him they are raising the payroll significantly enough to sign a couple star players. And Pinelly puts a good word out there in the media of "liking the challenge" so he looks good to Cubs fans (yeah I know I'm talking about those OUTSIDE NSBB!)

That's the only reason I can think of. He does not want a loosing team. So he must have inside knowledge that the Cubs are going to add significantly this offseason. However once Ramirez hears Piniella is getting strong consideration, will he want to stay?

The Cubs have been pretty stable at the manager's spot, with 3 full-time managers in the past 12 years. That's more stable than most teams. I don't really care if a guy is here longterm or not. These guys are caretakes, not game plan implementers like in the NFL.

Can someone explain to me why Uncle Lou would be so horrible. Looking at stats from the 2000 to 2002 seasons, it seems he had lots of high OBP boys in his lineup: Arod, Edgar Martinez (a fine hitter in his day), Ichiro, Mark McClemore, Mike Cameron...

Those are some fine hitters. I'm just asking, not trying to start an argument here. I would however, make the argument, that a little fire in the clubhouse and in the public (aka Leyland) would somehow benefit this team.

I don't care who manages them, if they don't get the players, it won't matter

If they bump up the payroll $20M to satisfy Sweet Lou, I could be persuaded! :)

Did anyone else listen to Bruce Levine on the Talkin Baseball radio show on Sunday? He was going on about how the Cubs could take the $20M they had set aside for the parking garage that's now on hold and throw it into payroll. I'd think that would cause some accounting problems, but it was interesting to hear someone say it.

That's irresponsible journalism. One has nothing to do with the other (infrastructure and player payroll). That's just his way of getting people talking about his report.

From what I've heard, he was lucky to have so many good players on his team, and regularly mocks the use of statistics in baseball.

I thought the Cubs were obligated to provide parking as part of the agreement for more night games, but I haven't heard anything about that since they put the garage on hold.

Just listen to him provide color commentary during the Oakland series. RISP, hit and runs, stolen bases-these are the things he favors. He mocked OBP and had no idea what WHIP was.
