Piniella in the last 30 seconds on Fox. "There are too many stats now." The Daron Sutton asked what his favorite state was, is it OPS? Piniella seemed like he didn't know what OPS was. Then Piniella said "what's WHIP?"

Ken Rosenthal on the pregame show said the Cubs are the best fit for Piniella. This could be worse than Dusty.

The only thing he would do that Dusty doesn't is see things from the dugout and march out to the umpire to chew him out and step on his own hat.

If we're going to use a manager who has already managed somewhere....why not Dierker!!!!!!!

Not to derail the thread, and I'm sure you've answered this elsewhere, but why hasn't Dierker managed at all in the last 5 years? I know about the seizure and brain surgery in, what, '99? 2000? But didn't he manage the Astros for another year or two after that? Why'd he stop managing after 2001? Or to put it another way, why is nobody hiring him?

According to this, it may be Dierker's choice:

October 18, 2001: Houston manager Larry Dierker resigns. Dierker led the Astros to four division crowns in five seasons at the helm, but never made it past the first round of the playoffs.

Dierker has a blog which you can find here.

So why would he accept an offer to manage the Cubs?

Hmm..I just opened his blog again, and these are the two sentences that jumped out at me.

If the team goes for another outfielder with good hitting credentials, he should be a fast runner too. In fact, I would take an outfielder with less power and more speed if I had the choice.

To clarify, he's talking about adding an outfielder to the current Astros team, not necessarily a general rule..but I still found it interesting.

I would think having Piniella in the fold would give us a better shot at getting A-Rod to waive his no trade clause this offseason.

If that happens, I'll be taking applications for a team to follow for next year and take a hiatus from the Cubs.

I might too. The second half of this season has been good practice for that. I'll always be a Cubs fan at heart, but I can go on hiatus.

Lou might scare the guys into winning a game or two, but he's a terrible long term solution.

My gut tells me that Donut man will hire Lou or Bowa. . . . or anyone not named Gonzalez, Girardi, Diercker, etc.

IMO Hendry is going after a kick butt take charge manager. This country cub atmosphere has got to end and henry will once again go to a horrible extreme.

Frank Robinson, Lou Piniella, and Felipe Alou all available in the same offseason.

Let's just say there's a reason I was hoping Dusty got fired in-season.

How much of an influance is Steve Stone? I believe I read that he has recomended Lou. Didn't Stone want Izturis too? If so, I want Stone out of the picture completely.

It would be pretty funny if the Cubs went from Andy, Jim and Dusty to John, Steve and Lou.

Funny in a "you thought it couldn't get any worse" sort of way.

Yeah, I'd just laugh all season long with that one.
